Choate-- Dorms, Student Insight-- current students please post!!! Thanks:)

OK, so I know that I am going to go to Choate next school year, but I won't be able to go to the re visit day:(. Can someone tell me what they do on the re visit day? Also, can anyone tell me about the third form girls' dorms? I THINK they are in Nichols and another smaller one, but I don't know which ones, and I probably never will until September since I'm not going to re visit day.
I want to know:
How large are each of the third form girls' dorm? Like, how many people are in it, and how large are the rooms?
is there AC??
Which one has more singles?
How likely am I to get a single if I request it on my roommate questionare-thing?
Which one is closer to what-- which one would you rather be in?

Thanks in advance.

Also, I heard that Choate students aren’t even allowed to use their phones MOn-Fri until after 3.(even just when walking around campus). BUt then I read this school news thing written in 2011 that said they changed that-- is this true?

If you can’t wear jeans to class, what do you wear? Slacks? Khakis??

Do they turn off the internet at a certain time at night? I heard that they turn it off at 9:45, even though our lights out time is only 10:45(!!!)

How much do they enforce lights out for thirs forms?? Which dorms are they more relxed with lights out for third form girls?? If you don’t finish an assignment, can you ask to stay up a little longer?

Hey abcabc333, I’m happy to answer your questions.

During revisit day, prospective students have a chance to follow a current Choate student around to classes. You get a sense of what a day at Choate is like!

Freshman girl dorms:
Nichols, Pitman, and Squire

Nichols is the largest girls dorm and it houses maybe 40 girls (most singles as well). Pitman is the second with 20; Squire is the smallest with 10-15 I think. There is no AC in any dorm. It’s hard to say how likely you are to get a single… there is no answer. The three freshman girl dorms are all near each other, so location doesn’t matter.

We are allowed to use our phones whenever, just not in class and in the dining hall.

Slack, khakis, anything that isn’t denim and low cut.

I’m not sure when internet shuts off for freshman… 9:45 sounds right, though.

The enforcement of lights out really depends on your prefects. You can definitely ask for late lights if you have lots of work, though.

Thanks so much! Do you know if Pitman and Squire have a lot of singles, too?? Thanks. Also, do you know if anyone has three people in a room?

I’m not sure how many singles Pitman has. Squire has two singles and a triple. Unfortunately, you cannot request a dorm for your first year at Choate.

What kind of questions are on the room mate questionare? Is there any type of question at the end that is like, " Is there any other information you would like to share with us" or something like that-- I really want to request a single:)

Does anyone know how many people usually have to share a shower?

@abcabc333: On the roommate questionnaire, you CAN request a single, but there is no guarantee that you will get one. Yoiu will not find out until move-in day which dorm you are in or whether or not you will have a roommate.

@abcabc333 - the number of people who share a shower really depends on what dorm you’re in. In some dorms, there is one shower per bathroom and four people share a bathroom. In other dorms, there are three showers in a bathroom and 20 people share the bathroom.

How big is the library at Choate?

The library is a standard size. Not as big as Andover’s or Exeter’s, but it still serves the same purpose.

As in how many floors?

Does the library have a lot study carrels, couches, private rooms (like for studying/ getting together with a group) , etc. or is it mainly just shelves and shelves of books? Can you go there and just work on Homework or is it kind of just a places where you get books and leave?

Are there specific places where you can talk and specific rooms that are quiet or is the whole library just quuuiet? I’m a library person and I’m really picky about libraries:) I don’t think I got to see it much on my tour.

@futureexonian either two or three floors, I don’t really remember. There is a dorm at the top of it, and the library goes into the basement

@abcabc333 there are couches and more comfortable chairs in the room in the front. There are private rooms on the first floor and downstairs, and there are specific places for talking and quiet areas too. People use the library to either do homework or get books

Wait, there’s a dorm on top of the library? What is it called? Which students does it house? It would be awesome to live a staircase away from a library-!

@FutureExonian15 - The library is three floors. There is a basement (book stacks and study rooms), main floor (books, research materials, and quiet study), and second floor (computer lab and study rooms).

@GoldenRatio - The dorm above the library is just called Library. It houses junior girls.

On average, how much homework do students get? (3rd forms)

Well, now I know which dorm I want to be in for junior year! Thanks!

@abc - the amount of homework you get depends on what classes you’re taking. on average, though, i’d say homework takes about two hours (if you don’t procrastinate).
