Yeah, Spencer should have more because it is a sophomore only dorm, and Hill might have less but I am not sure. And when I said CK is the chillest dorm for sophomores guys, I meant that the rules are the least strict here. Because there are so many PG’s, seniors, and juniors, the house advisors don’t care about lights out and weekend check-ins as much. Whereas in the new sophomore dorms, I know that—at least in the beginning of the year—lights out is strictly imposed and such.

Oh, and chillest also means that it is a very cold dorm. Winter comes, and it’s literally warmer outside.

Haha I’m a girl, but when I went to Choate this summer I was in Hill House. It’s really awesome. Right above the dining hall, perfect location in my opinion. NoHo is really good too-it’s new and they have air conditioning. When I first got there I accidentally walked into Mem house instead of the building that Hill is in. Really awkward. Anyway, thats my experience with Choate dorms. Had a friend in Woodhouse, which is also a good dorm.

How about girls’ sophomore dorms? Anyone know about them?

Yep! I’m a sophomore girl so I can help out. First there is Soho which people would argue as the most popular sophomore dorm. It hold 42 girls and is connected to Noho, which houses 42 sophomore boys (they are both only 3 years old). Then there is Archbold, which when you came for your interview, was the admissions building. The two floors above the AO holds about 25 sophomore girls and additional junior girls. Then there is McCook which houses anywhere from 14-20 sophomore girls depending on the year as well as a large amount of juniors and possibly also a few seniors next year. This dorm is right next to CK which is the brother dorm to McCook. The last sophomore dorm for next year will be Squire Stanley. For the past few years, Squire has always been a freshman girls dorm but due to the amount of incoming freshman vs. sophomores, Squire (traditionally freshman) has switched with Pitman (traditionally sophomores) for this upcoming year.

This article from The Choate News talks about the switching of the two dorms:

[Overenrollment Triggers Dorm Switch](http://thenews.choate.edu/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=901:overenrollment-triggers-dorm-switch&catid=19:news&Itemid=43)

Thanks!
So is it a total mystery of who your roommate is and which dorm you’ll be in until you get to campus? I can’t wait but I’m also nervous about finding out

You will find out who your roommate is during registration. As for dorms, check CHIP in late August under “View your Academic Information” and there will be a button that says “profile”. Click that button and there you can find your dorm, room number and advisor. One you find out what dorm you are in, let me know and I can tell you about it! I was nervous about living with a girl that I knew nothing about but we instantly became friends and as the year comes to an end we are still really good friends. Don’t worry!

Nothing to but wait until August…sighh
Do you know if Choate is going to send anything (like about sports or classes) within the next few weeks?

Last year my daughter got a package of information containing course selection, sports, health forms amongst other things in mid May. I expect the same this year.

As hpfulparent said, you should be receiving the information shortly. If you don’t have it by mid-June, I’d suggest you call the registrars office and ask them to send you the course selection booklet.

Supposedly we are getting our CHIP accounts this coming Monday. What is a CHIP account, and does that provide any information about what will coming next ?

Oooh. Where’d you hear that from brandon? Was there an email?

CHIP is the Choate online database. Teachers use it to post homework, readings and other resources. It also houses your email and all the information that makes Choate function. Sports schedules, dining hall menus, sign out sheets, daily information, library database, etc are all there. Basically anything that you need in regards to Choate is on CHIP. When grades come out, you view them on CHIP… when teachers post test grades and such, they are posted on CHIP… all phone numbers and office hours for teachers and employees are on CHIP. literally, everything.

Any advice on what to pack/buy at Target for the dorm rooms?

UNDER THE BED STORAGE!! and a lot of it. baskets for things like socks, hates, scarves, etc. hanging shoe holder, fan, mirror (full length and small), attachable hooks, towels, lots of hangers and basically anything that you think would make your room function easier. be creative!

also, on this forum somewhere is a thread called “the ultimate boarding school packing list”…literally it has everything.

Will I be able to fit all that stuff? On their website they “discourage” bringing in furniture ): and what happens to all of that over the summer?

Oh yeah, I saw that list, but it seemed like a BIT too much.
A broom and a dustpan? and a drying rack? Do we really need those

Yes, I promise you will be able to fit everything. DON’T BRING FURNITURE! I assume you are going to be a freshman so you will be living in either Nichols or Pitman next year. Nichols rooms are smaller and will not be able to accommodate additional furniture. Pitman has larger rooms but still I would not recommend large furniture items. Additionally, wait until you meet your room mate to buy lots of decorations. It’s always better to have your room look coherent and not like 2 different sides of the room within the same 4 walls. Dorms are supplied with vacuums, brooms and dustpans so you don’t need that… Things like additional small curtains or a book shelf that can sit on your dest may be helpful to you. The biggest thing is the storage you bring: under the bed, clothing organizers, shoe organizers, wall hooks, etc. Don’t worry though-- its probably better to wait until you get here and see your room and then plan. Walmart is extremely close so you can always go pick up bins or hooks when you get here if you need more. They sell out quick though at the beginning of the year so bring at least a few things to get you started.

Tarsier and I are both incoming sophomores… She is a girl and i am a boy. Do the rooms for sophomore tend to be larger than freshman?

Oh okay my bad. The rooms are a bit bigger usually but sophomore dorms like squire and arch for girls can have very small rooms. Same with mccook singles, some are larger than others. For boys, noho rooms are a good size but still don’t bring furniture. if you live near by, wait to bring furniture because chances are that if you bring it when you arrive you will be disappointed.
