Choate Placement Tests?

Hi! I’m applying for Choate as a repeat sophmore. I’m going into sophmore year and I am taking AB/BC Calculus AP. Last year I got an A in Pre-calc honors. I am wondering if for placement they prioritize the placement test or your previous grades and courses more. I am really worried that I’ll take the placement test and forget stuff that I learned years ago and be placed in Algebra or something. Sorry, I’m quite paranoid. Also how is science placement done? This year I will take Chemistry Honors and Physics Honors and last year I got an A in Biology (no honors offered) so I don’t know If I’ll have to take them again. Also I am taking APUSH next year which is a Choate 11th grade course, so what would I take if I got in and went to Choate in tenth grade?

Choate relies on its own placement tests to determine where you fall on the Choate academic scale. No student ends up in classes “beneath” him/her. You can trust the placement process to put you into the most challenging courses you can successfully handle. Course placements are based on academic readiness, not which grade you are in, so most classes comprise multiple forms. You can address these types of questions during your interview.

@ChoatieMom Do you know what the placement test is like?

Sorry, I never took one.

But there is a whole new batch of incoming Choaties who I’m sure can jump in on this one.

@skatergirl27 I took the math placement test a few moths ago and I did both tests. Theres two tests for 2 different levels of math. Its just like a normal test and there are about 30 questions I think and it is online and yeah its not too difficult it just wants to see what topics you covered more so than how good you are (thats what I think).

I’m going into 9th grade at Choate this fall, so I’m not completely sure if the process is the same for sophomore year, but I’d assume it’s at least similar. They offer two math placement tests, depending on your level. I took algebra 2 in eighth grade and took the higher level one. I found it easy, but that was just my opinion. Your math placement is a combination of your SSAT math score, placement test, teacher rec, and classes you’ve taken in the past. Science is mostly related to math placement; you don’t take a test for it. They look at your previous classes for science too. As a side note: I was in your place some months ago, so I know what it feels like to be worried and want to know this stuff early, but there’s plenty of time to think about this after you get your application in and receive your decisions.
