Choices

My Daughter has been admitted to Beloit. She has narrowed her schools down to St. Olaf and Beloit. She’s really having a hard time deciding. What other schools did some of you consider? If you’ve made a decision, what tipped you toward Beloit?

Right now I’m deciding between Smith and Beloit. : ) Smith is a fantastic school, of course, with an astounding alumni network–BUT, for me, Beloit’s financial package was considerably larger. Because of that, I’m leaning more toward Beloit.

I have a cousin who goes to St. Olaf (and my Spanish teacher attended it for one or two years!) and she really likes it. I have a different set of cousins who live in Northfield, and it’s an alright city. BEAUTIFUL drive up there.

A great website for finding out about schools is **************. You can read student reviews of all sorts of things about different colleges. I’ve found it really helpful. : )

Congrats to your daughter on getting admitted! They’re both great!

Oops! Didn’t know that we weren’t supposed to post links! My bad!

S2 is really interested in Olaf and Beloit, so i’m following this thread with interest. The two have different types of students but share the trait of being genuinely nice.

i’m a current beloit freshman and my top choices were beloit, lawrence, and macalester. i personally felt that macalester was rather cold (personality-wise!) and unfriendly- they weren’t that welcoming and seemed to have a “why should we try to be friendly, you ought to love our amazing school” kind of vibe. the choice between beloit and lawrence was extremely difficult for me, as i loved both schools. the financial aid package was bigger at beloit, and also i loved the international study opportunities and the russian department (i’m russian/french/art history major). there’s just a lot of smaller details why i prefer beloit to other schools, like how they include the paragraph in your acceptance letter as to why you were accepted or how there are soo many opportunities to do what you love. for example, next semester i’ll be baking the vegan baked goods for our cafeteria and i’ll be in the food co-op on campus and after i study abroad i will be giving two major presentations about research i conducted while abroad.

…in higher education. The quality of the education is high, the professors bend over backwards to mentor the students, showering them with internship and job information, and the costs are extremely low compared to colleges that are on par (really the top 20 LACs). Study the graduate school admission rates for even more encouragement. What Beloit lacks is a strong social life, a fun town, warm weather and strong sports teams. So it’s not for everybody. But our rising Beloit senior is thriving beyond our already high expectations.

beloit is such an amazing school. like many of the administrators i talked to said ‘it’s not for everyone, but it might be for you.’ what does your daughter want from her college experience?

i just got back from the senior open house last night, and it was so awesome. i stayed with a student and talked to a lot of other students and professors. they really truly do bend over backwards to help out however they can. and the coolest thing i think, is how they accept that they are teachers and also people. what i mean by this is that at many schools, teachers seem to place themselves above students. they think they are the authority and that their word is law. at beloit, teachers and students learn alongside each other. teachers are called by their first name, even! i don’t think you can get that anywhere else. every student i spoke with mentioned that everything they learn seems so connected. you find strange intellectual relationships between things that seem unrelated.

i disagree with onceburnt. the surrounding town sucks sort of (although the downtown is cute), but the social life is pretty nice on campus. everyone is so open and welcoming. there’s so much to do on campus. you really never have to leave. even on a sunday kids could be found shooting pool, drinking root beer and playing rock band in c-haus, hanging out at the international house for an ice cream social, sitting on the greek house porches playing guitar… the beloit campus feels like a tiny town. i loved my visit and i can’t wait to go back this fall as a student.

I visited Beloit in February for the Presidential Scholarship competition. Although I got the scholarship I decided not to attend. I was recruited by their tennis coach very hard and he is an extremely nice and caring man which made the decision not to attend difficult. However, I just didn’t like the town at all and didn’t see myself their for 4 years. Good luck to those of you who go. I hope you have a fantastic 4 years!
