Choose Your Own Quote Essay

Hi,

Does anyone know if Princeton cares if the "Choose you own quote" essay will be looked down upon if the quote is actually not from a book? What if the quote is just from an ancient philosopher?

the prompt explicity states “essay or book”

What if it’s a book that quotes someone else that happens to be an ancient philosopher…

What if it’s one of my favorite quotes ever and fits perfectly with my topic AND it’s an a book of poetry, BUT I’ve never read that book and quite honestly don’t seem like I would have? Could the admissions officers see through me, or if I write an outstanding essay will it not even matter? Not that I want to lie…I really, really like this quote…

I see that it explicitly states “essay or book”, and it’s always good to follow instructions to the T, but really, the source of the quote is very much secondary to the quote’s importance to you, and how you can incorporate an experience into the meaning of that quote. I’m also certain that Princeton adcoms don’t have the time to even read the source for the quotes/if they do, they probably don’t care. I’d say go for it if you really like the quote.
