Choosing my own quote for the essay

Can I use a quote that I didn't read in an essay or book? I really want to use: "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”-Winston Churchill

The prolem is that I already wrote an essay on perseverance and can't find a quote relating to it from books I have read.

are you sure he said that?? maybe he wrote it down somewhere, or sth. i am sure that someone used it at some point in a book, just google it ^^

I have a friend who quoted herself and then wrote that essay. She’s at Princeton.

I was planning on finding a quote that matches an essay I’ve already written for my Yale supplement as well, but do you think that would come off as being lazy, or will they not care that I’m not responding specifically to one of their prompts?

Arzachel, that’s exactly what I’m doing for my Princeton essay. I don’t think Princeton will think you’re lazy; if you choose your quote well, I doubt they’d even know that you used an essay for another school.
