Right now I'm really starting to think about majors, and particularly biological science majors, such as biochemistry, biophysics, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, etc. This is because I am thinking of looking at patent law, I like biology and am skilled in it, and the biological science field is exploding with all of the biological technological advances and genetic advances going on. However, I am unsure of how to choose a major for what I want to do. For a while I was thinking of biochemistry, but I was recently told that biochemistry is a dead end (it's a de facto medical major from what I heard) and that I should look into biotechnology, biophysics, or biomedical engineering. I was told that biophysics is becoming the new thing out there, but not many schools offer it. Can someone give me informations on what paths the major biological majors will put me on, and how widely offered they are, along with difficulties and any other information, using the criteria I gave above. Thanks.

Biochemistry is a dead end? I've never heard of that before...

If someone could give a list of the schools that offer biophysics (I know there aren't many), along with the schools that are the best in these types of programs (like JHU), that would be good also.

What do you mean Biochemistry is a dead end?

Perhaps I should've been more specific as to what I meant about biochemistry. I have been told that biochemistry is more of a de facto medical major and that for what I want to do, biotechnology would be something to consider when thinking about patent law. After all, patent law is about technology.

Thanks for the list. Any other information would be good.

Don't write off biochem if you're honestly interested in it. I know biochem majors who aren't pre-med and there's plenty of research (at least to my knowledge) going on in the biochemistry field.

I see what you are saying, but what I was saying (or left out in the first post) was that for patent law, I've been told it's better to have biotechnology (which I'm interested in as well) as a major for patent law, since it deals more with innovation than research.

However, if someone could give a brief compare and contrast between biochemistry and biotechnology, that would be good.

So far biophysics looks pretty cool.

If you're thinking about going into a Ph.D program--this is a long way off for you so I'd recommend that you not base your decision on this--the exact words on your diploma aren't as important as the content of courses you've taken, grades received, letters of recommendation (some would say that these are the most important), and research experience (having a publication record is good, but not having an authorship won't doom you as long as you show strong research potential).

Also, I think that [url=http://www.collegeboard.com/csearch/majors_careers/profiles/]Molecular Biology might be interesting. The site didn't have to much info on Biophysics.

Is there someone majoring in Biochemistry?

The Molecular link is wrong try here: Molecular Biology
