Choosing a Major!

Hey guys!

I am a junior and an international student.

Basically, I have Business, Psychology/Sociology, Education, and Sports Medicine in my mind as a major I would like to pursue.

Can you guys give me any pros/cons on each major? Advice? Colleges that are good for these majors? I also have a career day coming up at our school and I need to choose 3 from these 4 and rank them. Please help! Thanks :)

If you are unsure about your major, then you probably shouldn’t be selecting schools on the basis of their strengths in each major. Besides, most highly-ranked undergraduate schools have great departments in economics, sociology and psychology; some of them may have good business programs too. My suggestion is to look for schools that offer all of those majors, then take some classes and see what you like. That’s how I selected my major.

For your career day, just do the ranking based on your feelings now. As a junior in high school, it doesn’t really matter; you can always change the order later or add and drop new majors entirely.

I really recommend doing what you’re actually passionate about and not what you think is the best field to go into. Personally, I think all of those are very broad and great fields but most will require more than a Bachelor’s degree. You could always go undecided and take a variety of classes and then decide, but with some schools you may have to graduate later because they have so many requirements.

These are all very different. If you’re really undecided between fields, psychology is the most broadly applicable as understanding that subject would help you in the business world, in the classroom, and as a good pre-med major. But you have plenty of time to decide.

I agree with juillet, if your still unsure then don’t base your school decision off of these specific majors. It is perfectly fine to go into college as an undecided major or change your major. The majority of people end up changing their major or some concentration within their major at least one time, so don’t worry if you change your mind!

I don’t recommend getting a psychology degree unless you actually decide to do something in that field, in which case you will most likely need to get a higher degree or some type of certification.

HOWEVER, if you are still unsure when you are applying to schools I’d apply as undecided or some type of liberal arts degree. At most colleges the specialty schools (business, engineering, journalism, etc) are harder to get into because they accept fewer people. Once your at a college its easier to change your major as long as you keep your grades up!
