How did you know which major was right for you? I’m about to start my senior year so I’ll be filling out college applications soon. I have a passion for the law, and I’ve always wanted to be a lawyer or to be in the FBI. However, I’ve always had an interest in acting. I took an acting class this year and I LOVED it. I’ve started singing as well, and I really enjoy it. Lately, I’ve had a deep interest in Broadway. I don’t know if I want to go to college for law or theatre now. Any advice?
Apply to schools with a broad range of options and that don’t ask you to declare your major until 2nd year (which is most colleges, other than engineering / arch / some CS programs). Look for info on ‘undecided’ students at the colleges you are interested in- there are more than a few that will assign as your first advisor one who has experience helping id good classes to explore your possible majors.
Allow college to expand your view of what your career path will be: there are a lot of kinds of law and a lot of ways to have theatre in your life- plus, as your recent discovery of an interest in theatre shows, your interests will evolve over time. One of the normal things to do in college is to discern what you are interested in doing for a career vs what is an activity that you enjoy. My theatre / astrophysics HS kid morphed into a theatre / physics kid when she worked out that (to her) astronomy was more fun as a hobby than a subject, and then a physics gradschool kid who goes to a lot of theatre b/c theatre hours weren’t as fun in grad school as in HS & college. Obvs, ymmv but you get the idea.
