Choosing between Macaulay and St Johns..

Hey everyone,

So just yesterday I was accepted into the 4 year Macaulay Honors program at CUNY Hunter (off the waitlist). And so now I have to make the choice between that, or St. Johns PharmD 6 year program.. I'm really torn..

I do live by St. Johns, and so I'm not too far from the city. If I do choose St. Johns, I'd have to take out about 150k in student loans over the 6 years while Macaulay is free.. Also, I wouldn't dorm at St Johns, but I would dorm if I attended Hunter.

With my intended major somewhere within the Health Sciences (haven't quite narrowed it down yet..), along with all of these other factors, what advice/suggestions or comments do you guys have for me?

Anything would help, really.

Thanks

Do hunter, no- brainer if you ask me.

Thanks, but what are some of the reasons for that? I mean in my eyes, SJU PharmD program is more financially stable after I graduate and for that reason is why I’m considering it, as pharmacists these days do make six figures as their starting salary…

If you know for certain that you are committed to pharmacy as a career, probably makes more sense to go to SJU because you are admitted already to the pharmacy program. Macaulay would be free for four years, but you would still need to apply to pharmacy programs, and you would still need to pay for pharmacy school. How much debt would pharmacy school alone leave you with?

If you are not certain that you want to pursue pharmacy as a career, Macaulay is a better choice.

Could you transfer to University of Buffalo pharmacy after graduating from Hunter/Macaulay?

St. John’s is extremely expensive if they haven’t offered you much financial aid.

Taking out 150k in loans for SJU’s pharm program to me is absurd (my mom graduated with huge debt from st johns btw and it has impacted her life to this day tremendously)…If you’re bright enough to get into macauly u should be able to get into a pharm program upon graduation + you would probably enjoy your college years more (getting to live in manhattan, free laptop, etc). I have lots of friends who are in st johns pharm program, most of whom don’t like it very much, and I’m not sure how many of them are getting jobs after college anyway…but if you are certain you can pay the debt back and wanted to be a pharmacist, its not a bad option.

Hmm well, I’ll probably choose Macaulay… Thanks again for all of the input

Is Mccaulay offering housing too?

Yeah, Macaulay Honors at Hunter does offer free housing in the city

I am having the same problem. I am contemplating whether I want to go to Macaulay honors at Queens or do the St. Johns PharmD program. I have an interest in pharmacy but I’m still thinking about medicine as well. What college should I pick? Thanks!
