Choosing classes within a Major?

Hello all, this may seem like a daft question but I am quite unsure about the education system in the U.S. As an undergraduate student, are we allowed to choose the subjects that we take for a specific major? For example, If I take a major in biology but I do not wish to take Genetics, would that be possible?
Thanks in advance

Typically, there will be a set of core requirements that are non-negotiable (of which genetics is likely to be one of them) to ensure that you graduate having basic skills that every biology major should know. However, once these are completed you’ll be allowed to choose from a list of approved courses to satisfy the upper-division elective requirement. What classes are offered will depend on the school; you can usually expect that larger universities will offer more choices, at the expense of larger, more impersonal classes.

Thanks for the response  Appreciate it
