Choosing College near NYC for computer science or related major, Please help~

hi all,

i'm looking for colleges near nyc for computer science major,

I have done some research ,
Please help to rank the following colleges and if possible can answer any of the following questions resulted from my research (thanks to all in advance):

STONY BROOK (will try to apply to, but probably a little far from nyc)

CITY COLLEGE (heard they have decent cs programs, but are there many employers coming to campus?) Link: http://www.ccny.cuny.edu/compsci/upload/Fall2011_Spring2012.pdf

BROOKLYN COLLEGE (there is lots of options, computer science/computer programming/computer information system, but not sure how good is the school for cs and is there a lot of employers coming to campus?) Link: Brooklyn College | Majors, Minors and Concentrations

CITY TECH (their Computer Information System program looks pretty attracting with lots of practical courses, but are there many employers coming to campus?) Link: http://www.citytech.cuny.edu/catalog/docs/catalog11_13.pdf#nameddest=cst (PAGE214)

RUTGERS - NEW BRUNSWICK (Probably more prestigious with better employment? don't know too much, any suggestions?)

HUNTER COLLEGE (took a look at their curriculum, it is a BA, not BS, but still don't know how is it overall? also heard that employers is not as many as ccny city college, true?)
Link: Majoring in Computer Science ? Hunter College

QUEENS COLLEGE (heard that professors don't know how to teach there?? and not many employers either??) link: http://www.cs.qc.cuny.edu/undergrad/BS.pdf

NJIT (don't have comments yet)

or any other suggestions?

thanks you all very much

NYU? I think its ranked pretty high in CS

They all get together and compete to be the worst teacher. LMAO!

Since, Rutgers is out of state, I don’t see any reason to go there.

Stony Brook is your best bet.

Sorry, NYU is too expensive, i’m currently working and will be paying myself.

thanks, any other suggestions?

Rutgers is out of the list (out of NY State, gets little pricy )

thanks for this great comments, I’m also trying to figure out what exactly i like.

I have did a lot of research, the computer science is more in depth programming, which I do like (I already took Calculus I, II, III, Physics I, II, III, and differential equations, Static and Probability, no problem with math).

However, when i took a look at CIS program at City Tech, they also have in depth Java, C++, Web Programming, Mobile Application Programming, plus Unix, Lunix languages.

the thing is that’s what they show up in their undergrad catalog, BUT, I don’t know how good is it, is it as good as it describes, or is it just saying it, and after you graduate, you barely learned “enough” or something.

i’m trying to compare which school have a better curriculum, or great at teaching computer science, just in general good for computer science, because I heard some school they don’t know how to teach for computer science, or some school just won’t get the enough out of it. Please correct me if i’m wrong or anything, just trying to summarize my research and got the best out of it.

any further suggestions are Greatly appreciated

thanks alot

Stony Brook is far and away your best choice here, and it’s a great value. Rutgers is the only other school on your list that merits consideration for CS, but if you’re in-state for NY, then why not stick with Stony Brook? The other schools are far weaker.

You are wise to look carefully at the CS programs. Unlike many of the more established STEM fields, CS programs vary greatly in quality, even to the extent that it’s difficult to argue that they’re even teaching the same discipline.

At Stony Brook, you’ll receive a true CS education.

NYU Poly in Brooklyn, but it’s private so costly unless you qualify for financial aid.

Yeah NYU Poly maybe just as expensive as NYU soon but atleast Poly gives out decent scholarship and money if you qualify. and CS department at NYU is really good especially at Poly from what i’m hearing.

another decent option would be City College!

If you’re talking about employers coming to campus to recruit students, forget CUNY and go to SUNY Stonybrook or NYU

thanks Lilmelonred,

I think i’m going to apply for Poly/Njit/ and one cuny school.

but how is City College CS compared to Brooklyn Tech, Hunter, and Queens?

thanks in advance

NYU and PINYU (Polytechnic Institute of New York University, or NYU-Poly) are in the process of merging; both schools have CS departments and majors. PINYU has historically had better financial aid than NYU (which has a reputation for poor financial aid). You may want to ask the schools how the merger will affect CS and financial aid.

Stony Brook is an obvious choice for a New York resident.

Stony Brook, and it’s not even close.

How do you define “close”? Are you commuting? I only ask because Stony is about 90 minutes from Manhattan without traffic. If you’re not looking to commute, factor in that LI is a very expensive city to live in…I’d put it up there with living in Manhattan proper, minus the benefit of mass transit cos it’s a royal pain to get anywhere in LI without a car.

This is a great board…you’ll get lots of helpful info, but keep in mind that alot of folks here have champagne tastes where colleges are concerned. Don’t rule out the CUNY schools! Many of them are regularly included in Princeton’s Best 377 Colleges. I know Queens college has a 16:1 student teacher ratio which rivals some schools that cost ten times as much.

yeh,

price is one factor should be less than 20k, or i can’t afford it.

distance is another factor, i’m living in brooklyn, where-ever any type of public transportation can reach within 1.5 hr, i’m willing to.

any suggestions?

thanks

In-state cost of Stony Brook is $22,122 (living at the school), so even just a few thousand in financial aid and scholarships (or frugal habits on transportation and personal costs) can make it affordable to you. Check the net price calculator for a financial aid estimate.

sorry, i’m currently working in nyc (near 42nd st), need that job to support myself.
commuting to SB by public transportation is around 2.5-3hrs…

Have you tried the net price calculators at each of the schools’ web sites to get financial aid estimates?
