Choosing colleges by geography

Every student should have some sort of hit list of priorities when they are looking for a college, whether that's a major, a size of student body, or a specific geographic location. A few years ago there was a parent that had a nearby airport as a priority, which led to a discussion of Colleges serviced by Southwest Airlines. I thought that was just as good a priority as any.

I found this link on FB today in a post from my son's college in Burlington, VT. Consortium of Vermont Colleges: Start Your Vermont College Search Here! If you are interested in Vermont, but don't know much about the colleges, this may help. That link made me think about this one for Virginia: Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia [CICV] and that made me wonder if there are others out there that may be helpful to other families.

Great idea Kathiep. When SecondToGo started his college search he was interested in D3 sports … which led to investigating a ton of lesser known schools in the northeast and mid-atlantic … a host of very nice schools which I never knew existed before his search. FYI - instead of using links we got SecondToGo a fat college guide book and he slugged through all the school in his target states (typically while watching a game on TV) … it really didn’t take that long to do.

Good point 3togo. My coworkers wanted to watch their son play basketball in college. He generally wanted to stay within a few hours of home and thought he would major in business. They did their search by colleges in a certain area division. They found that colleges that played in that league were quite similar.

My favorite map!

You can also go to google maps and type in ( colleges universities ) - no parentheses Putting an “and” between them messes up the search.

Be careful with this one. It’s only for private colleges, and some of the most interesting colleges in Virginia are public.
