Does it seem like I'm all over the map? (Are my extracurriculars not focused enough?)

My dream school is NYU. I feel like I'm not going to get in...do I have a chance?

Work REALLY hard on your academics to have a clear upward trend, 'cause 3.5 leaves something to be desired… For the SATs look at the SAT section on this page where you’ll find silverturtle’s guide which is pretty good. It all comes down to practice, really. As for your ECs, make it clear that you have a passion for music and taekwondo.

@tnoonan2013 I’m considering economics and a minor in graphic design. My extracurriculars don’t show an interest in those majors :(

@gregariousgatsby Really? Cost isn’t a limiting factor; location is. My parents want me to go to a college nearby I’m glad TCNJ is a good fit; I love the campus. Do you think I could get in to NYU CAS? Also, are there any other colleges I should add to my list?

Ok, I think you have a good chance at NYU if you do pull up all your standardized test scores and if you write a reallllllly kick-ass essay, keep your grades and EC’s up in the process of doing aforementioned things and I think you have a good chance at where ever you apply :D

Well, if I were you I would write about tutoring kids in Newark and how enriching of an experience it was(assuming it was) and then somehow connect that to your desire to major in economics and somehow mix that with doing it on a global scale(think micro investing, Richard Branson type stuff), because since NYU is the “Global Network University” I’m sure they would love to hear that you plan on using the education you receive from there and using it to make an impact on the world on a global scale. But that’s my opinion just write from your heart and what your passionate about and I’m positive you have a fighting chance of getting in!

P.S. Please excuse my poor writing I’m really tired and studying for APUSH Exam -_-

Don’t pin your Self esteem on getting into NYU. it’s a reach and the score improvement would need to be big. Also don’t take the above advice on essays. Admissions readers gag over those over used topics.

As much as the above advise is true, I really don’t see any other experiences or interests (that you’ve posted) that could make a very different essay, but if you have a hobbie or interest that is uncommon definitely write about that, for example I plan on writing my essay about garlic and how I’m similar to it, I won’t disclose any further details so no one steals the idea! Lol but seriously just write about whatever your passionate about and I’m sure it will come across to the admissions peeps a lot better than you may think

There are a thousand plus colleges you could get into. Te biggest question is what can your family afford to pay? Right now you’re not in range for most schools that meet need, but there are oodles of private colleges that would accept you if your family can pay for them.
