Choosing Junior Classes for track to Med-School?!?

I want to know the best classes to take to increase my chances of getting in to Med-School

My options are...

Sciences- AP or Hon Chemistry vs. AP Physics
Math- Pre Calc vs. Discreet
English- AP English 3, or Hon English 3. (I hate writing essays, I like reading though)

Psychology and Allied Health as my electives? Or French 1 instead of Psychology. I could take French after I finish Spanish 1 and 2. So I don't know whether taking 2 languages will help me, or to take psychology in place of French.

And I'll be taking AP US Gov't, and Hon US History in Junior year too.

Hey))
Although you probably know this high school classes don’t really matter much in the grand scheme of getting into med school. This said they do provide the foundation that you’ll build on in college. In high school it’s probably best to think in terms of what will make your pre-med years easier.

AP anything is technically better, but make sure you don’t mind later taking a harder class in that department (so if you take AP Chem which will count as Gen Chem in college you might have to take a chem class anyway) because a lot of medical schools don’t accept AP credits. To be honest, if you really like either chem or physics take the AP that you like because it will help with just generally looking better on your college app.

We didn’t have Discreet (so I’m not even sure what that is) but unless it’s calc take pre-calc. Most med schools (and a lot of science majors) will expect you to do Calc 1 and 2 so whatever brings you closest to that is probs best.

English doesn’t matter in med school at all. So do either a)whichever you like more or b)whatever gets you into the undergrad college you want

4.As to everything else, get as much exposure as you can in the health care field. Psychology will also probably help because very very far down the line there is a section on the USMLE that is called Behavioral Sciences which has to do with psych+a ton of other things (but that’s not that important right now). Pretty much you’ll have the chance to do all this in college anyway. My only piece of advice is to learn as much Spanish as you can because in some states (and you don’t know where you’ll end up) it’s a very important language to know. Although I love the fact that I personally know French, I’m now sort of regretting not pursuing Spanish instead.

Alright hope that helped a little))) Good luck)))

That helped a lot. Gonna take Honors Chem, Anatomy next year, and Psychology. Taking AP Eng or Hon, idk yet. Talking to guidance soon. THANKS!

And discreet is basically a bunch of random Honors math stuff. Not taking it  pre calc instead lol.

Take AP classes and get credits for something that you absolutely hate. That will save you time at college as well as college GPA. D. had credit for US History, the hardest subject at HS (for her), did not need to take it at college (potentially lowering her almost perfect college GPA). She also took AP English. She is very strong writer, but got “4”, not “5” on AP exam, still saved her whole semester of college English. She took one semester of college Honors English and had an easy “A”, but class was a waste of time for her. HS Spanish was very useful, she placed into 3rd year of Spanish at college and that class has improved her Spanish tremendously, veyr good class by her own admission. Spanish is a great asset to have in MD carrier.
I would not worry too much about stuff like Chem., and certainly NOT Anatomy. Anatomy is not required by most Med. Schools. D. took it at college because one of her Med. Schools added as “strongly recommended”. It was one of the hardest classes at college and there is no way HS Anatomy will help, more so that you might not need to take it in UG at all. The same goes for Psych,. although Neuroscience classes seem to be easier at college than general Bio classes. All Neuroscience classes are very interesting, D. took lots of them without any Psych. in HS.

Speaking from my own experience anatomy in HS (and in college as long as you can make sure it doesn’t ruin your GPA) will be one of the most helpful classes since it’s part of the curriculum in med school. If you don’t take anatomy in hs or college you will be shell-shocked when you do it in med school. And you’ll have a lot of other equally difficult subjects to study at the same time. It’s better to at least have a basic knowledge of anatomy than to have no knowledge in it at all.

Yes, Anatomy is very hard, but so are Physiology, Cell Bio, Orgo, Pharmocology, Genetics…and many others. Do you plan to take them all in HS?

How about other majors? Do they take some Engineering classes in HS?

Well, if so, I would propose to graduate earlier from HS and go to college to take real college classes in these proffessional subjects. HS is more for basics which are not given enough attention. The resona that some kids struggle with GenChem in most cases is because they do not have enough math background to deal with it. Once they are given remedial input in applicable math, they do much better, their grades in Chem go up.

sugar_sweet111, I completely agree with that. That is basically what my Guidance counselor told me about anatomy. I am trying to be in the top 5% of my class (18 places of 360) and last semester my transcript said I was #38 without those Honors classes included from last semester. And MiamiDAP, that is exactly what my Hon English/ 11th grade AP English teacher told me not to do. Because he said that I will not be as good as I would be if I really loved writing and English. So I will most likely take “Hon Eng and language composition III”.

My HS Offers 8 AP classes available to me. I’ll be taking AP Calc Senior year if I like pre calc, AP Gov’t Junior year, and possibly AP Physics instead of Chemistry. Whichever benefits me more.

My wife is an MD, and she said Organic Chemistry was the weeder class at Michigan, so I would recommend beefing up your Chemistry skills. Orgo almost beat her…almost.

Organic Chem isn’t offered in my HS. They only offer regular, Honors, or AP Chemistry here at my HS. I’ve heard the teacher is very hard in AP. So I plan to take Honors if I don’t have to take AP to be an Anesthesiologist. I want to be an Anesthesiologist because 2 of my friends dad’s are in that profession and they say it is good to get into. My Allied Health teacher also suggested Radiology.

And thanks, Any benefiting advice is greatly appreciated :)
