I am an incoming freshman to the Kelley School of Business. I want to have a job in the sports business field. I want to like work for a sports franchise. Can someone guide me to which is the best major or majors to choose. Accounting and Business Law with minor in sports management, Finance and accotuning with sports management minor, Finance and Sports Management or something else?
I would just ask your adviser. Your major doesn’t really matter until junior year as long as you major in something in business. You’ll also get a better feel of which majors would be best for you when you start taking classes. I would also caution that lots of people want a career path similar to yours, but there aren’t nearly as many jobs available as people seeking them in sports. I love sports too and I think it could be exciting to work for a sports franchise, but I’m not counting it.
Hey Sandeep, as mentioned earlier majors don’t matter until your junior year, however, keeping accounting and finance until you decide your final major (junior year might be helpful) for two reasons; more job opportunities and more scholarships, i.e. you will be eligible for more. However, if you are sure you don’t want these then that’s a diff story!
If you want to work for a sports franchise then you need to major in professional sales and sports management. If the thought of being a salesman doesn’t appeal to you, then you need to reconsider the thought of working for a sports franchise. Almost all of the jobs in a sports franchise involve sales (especially for a new graduate).
Mark Cuban has repeatedly said that sports management degrees are a complete waste, that the sports industry is the “worst possible business for a college graduate to try to get into. It doesn’t pay s–t. There are a thousand people applying for every job.” He’s also said that he gets like 20 resumes a week from people who claim they are willing to work for free, they just want a chance to get into the business.
Even those people that don’t agree with Cuban about the value of a sports management degree, they do agree with Mark’s viewpoint that you have to be able to “sell” to get and keep a job for a sports franchise.
Below are some links to some articles or videos that you should probably look at and then do your own research.
