Should I choose Electrical Engineering instead of Computer Engineering if I want to study both computer networking and solar energy?

I don’t believe that computer engineering has anything to do with networking, and just based off my perception, electrical =/= solar.

Solar energy sounds more environmental with a good amount of math involved. It doesn’t necessarily matter your designated major at this point though, just know that you will have to get into Math 124 (calculus) and beyond. Just worry more about prereqs and not the specific name of your major.

This is all based off of my limited knowledge of the UW however, seeing as I too am applying for the school for 2010.

environmental, in the traditional sense, is a nicer way of saying wastewater treatment.

the best way to set yourself up for a career in solar energy is through electrical engineering. the other forms of alternative energy (wind, wave, fuel cells, new fuels) also involve a lot of EE work, though not quite as “on the front lines”.

computer networking falls under computer science/IT. electrical engineering won’t help you much with that.
