Choosing Schools

So I revelry got into Sonoma State and I’m not trying to sound like a condescending jerk but I kinda had a feeling I would get in here. I was also admitted into San Jose State which I’m especially happy about.
Long Beach denied me but that’s okay. Everything happens for a reason (or so they say).
I was also denied to Northridge but this is baffling to me because I thought u would get in. I am confused because u know this person who got in and they barely took any ap or honors courses and I know this for a fact. No hate towards them, they are a good person but I’m just confused as to how they rejected me but they got in. I’m not an admissions officer so I don’t know.
Now I’m waiting to hear from San Diego and Fullerton. I honestly probably won’t get into SDSU but in the possibility that I do, what school should I pick out of the bunch. Excluding Sonoma, what about SDSU, Fullerton, and San Jose.
Does anyone have the most recent rankings or acceptance rates stats? I’m a low income family with an EFO of 0 so it would also be nice to see the most updated tuition and cost for each school.
I’m applying to lots of scholarships so hopefully I got some.
Thanks.

I would not try to decide which school until you have all your decisions. Unless you are local to SDSU and CSUF and since you were denied from CSULB and CSUN, your chances are not great at these 2 schools. Sorry to be frank, but both SDSU and CSUF have higher EI thresholds than Sonoma and San Jose state especially if you are out of the area.

For CSUN, if you are not local, you need a minimum EI of 3800 but if you applied to an impacted major, then the EI will be higher.

Right now your choices are Sonoma and SJSU. SJSU sounds like the best option so far. I would wait for your FA package from all the schools you are considering to see if there will be any significant cost differences.

COA for SJSU as a Freshman: https://www.sjsu.edu/faso/docs/1920_COA_ugrd.pdf

COA for Sonoma State: https://web.sonoma.edu/finaid/cost_of_attendance/1920_costs.htm

With an EFC of $0, will may still not get enough FA to be able to cover all expenses so did you run the Net Price Calculators on the Cal states? What kind numbers did you get?

Rankings for what Major (most rankings are for the Graduate level not Undergrad). Acceptance rates are based on last year’s number and will be different for each major.

If you haven’t visited SJSU or Sonoma, I would suggest you schedule a tour just to an idea of either campus will work for you.

I would not worry about what “other” applicants have done or not done. Unless you actually sat down and helped this person fill out their application, you do not know everything was submitted.

If you are not happy with your choices, there is always alternate paths to get you into your choice school.

Those other options are ?

  1. You attend your local community college for 2 years, save some money, obtain your ADT for the Cal states or TAG to one of the six UC’s and transfer.

  2. You take a Gap year, possibly work and rework your college list to include more schools you are willing to attend and can get an acceptance.

I might want to add that based on one of your other discussions, did you receive a D in your Anatomy class 1st semester Senior year? Did CSUN ask you submit a Mid-year senior transcript?. If the D was on that transcript which you submitted, another reason why you were denied.

I agree, being denied by CSUN suggests SDSU and Fullerton are unlikely at this point.

IMHO, Sonoma is the hidden gem of the CSU system. Small by CSU standards, great location/weather and a highly residential campus - the honors program is solid. You should visit before writing it off.

NCalRent is right about Sonoma State (full disclosure–I am an SSU alum, Class of '93).

We visited with our oldest child back in 2017. The campus had been updated quite a bit since I had been there. While it is small, it has a lot of the nicer features of larger campuses including an amphitheater for concerts. It might not have big name status, but we just happened to run into the superintendent of a large Nor Cal school district who was there visiting his son. A local Sacramento morning news anchor also sent his child there, even though there were plenty of other options.
