Choosing the best premed college

Hey guys I was wondering which of the three colleges is the best for premed: case western reserve university, university is wiscomsin madison, and ohio state university. I am in state for osu.I was also wondering if it is best to choose a premed college based off of program rankings, for example university of wisconsin madison is ranked #2 in microbiology according to us news college rankings, or off of overall college rankings, for example case western is ranked #38, wisconsin is ranked #47, and osu is ranked #55? I’m asking because I really like these three colleges, so I would be happy at any one of them. Cost is not too big of an issue for me
Thanks!

Any are fine for premed. GPA and mcat scores are important, plus EC.

Which school would be best fit if you decide not to go premed? That is the question you need to ask.

None of those rankings matter to med schools…they won’t look at them or consider them.

What SOMs will look closely at: BCMP GPA. cum GPA, MCAT, medically related ECs and LORs…

UW is OOS for you, will your parents happily pay the added cost? If not, forget that one. Case can be pricey as well.

What are your parents saying about costs?

You should go where you want to go.

Nevertheless, if you do really well undergrad at an institution that has a med school, you may get a slight bump if applying for admission there.

Hey guys thanks for the great responses so far, mom2collegekids my parents said that they will pay for any college I choose to attend and also that’s not really a burden on them. Also can you guys tell me, of the schools I listed, which one has better premed education and better mcat preparation?
Thanks

If you choose a low cost undergraduate school, will your parents contribute the savings toward your medical school?

Medical school is expensive and could result in decades of debt repayments afterward:

It’s hard to imagine a 4 year college that offers “inadequate” MCAT preparation. The MCAT examines problem solving, critical thinking, and actual knowledge is in third place. Any school that offers the required pre-med courses is suitable. Having a medical center or research facility at hand is an additional bonus, particularly if you are thinking of a research-oriented medical career.

Colleges do NOT prepare you for the MCAT. They don’t do that.

They all offer the same basic garden variety bio, gen chem, ochem, physics, psych, sociology, calc classes.

Go to the school that you like best.

Take a philosophy deductive logic class…that will help you think.

CWRU gets an “honorable mention” in the online list, “The Experts’ Choice: Colleges With Great Pre-med Programs.” I’m not sure about their overall methodolgy, but Case and the other schools on the list do seem pretty solid.

Btw, not sure where you have seen a USNWR rating for Wisconsin’s #2 standing in microbiology? If this is for their graduate program, I would tend to disregard it, impressive as it is.

I’m glad you like your college options. I think you could reach your goals from any of the three.

You are a senior. Haven’t you already decided where you’re going?

BTW…your GPA is an issue. Stay on top of that if you want to go to med school.

I am a senior and I decided to go to case western reserve and major in biomedical engineering, but I just wanted to know if I made the right decision or not by posing the question in a different perspective/view.

Thanks for the great responses guys!

CWRU is an excellent choice, and, of those three, would be my choice if cost did not matter much.

@Icefire111 What was your cost difference between CWRU and OSU?

FWIW, you don’t always get a bump if you go to an undergrad school with a med school. Two members of my family are employed by Johns Hopkins and have some inside knowledge, and they say that Hopkins at least is harder on JHU undergrads for med school admissions. No clue why.

cost for CWRU: about $45,000
OSU: about $16,000

In my family that would make the comparison easy. tOSU by a long shot. Maybe your family can afford more than mine

@Icefire111 Thanks for the info. Take advantage of everything CWRU has to offer! It’s a great school.
