Currently I am at a college studying a strict classical music program for vocal performance. However, I would like to study other genres, preferably a pop/rock type of genre. So my question is what colleges or universities are there that have this type of program to study?

Hello agjung, Do you have preferences on location or size? There are several contemporary music schools and many of them have pop/rock/jazz for vocals. Tell us more about yourself so we can give you a reasonable starting point.

I don’t have any preference on size or location, but smaller would be good. The only thing I’m really concerned about is tuition. As for things about me, I was in show choir, I’ve been singing classical music, but like I said, I want to branch out and so I would be learning some techniques for the first time. I am a hardworker and I will strive for anything that I am passionate about like music performance. Thanks again!

The reason I ask is that if you like the city you’re currently living, or at least the state or country, then we can suggest a school that might be near you to check out. I assume you don’t have a lot of spare cash to travel to look at schools or to audition at several places? If you are in California, NY, or Boston, then many of us can help you from there. Are you looking at transferring as an undergrad or will you graduate from where you are and then pursue contemporary music as a grad student? You are being too vague so the answers we can give will only be vague.

Here’s a link to a discussion on jazz programs. Berklee College of Music in Boston is a contemporary music school w/ jazz, pop, rock, gospel, etc.

Okay, well I will be applying as an undergrad transfer. This year is my first year attending college. I live in Indiana, so there aren’t very many places with contemporary music programs. So, I’m going to have to travel far in order to go to school which is fine so yes California, New York, and Boston schools are fine. Contemporary music is what I’m interested in not classic. Thanks again, and if you need more information, I’ll gladly supply it.

Belmont has a major in commercial music which seems quite well regarded.

In Toronto, Humber College has a good contemporary music program with a focus on industry skills. There is currently an active thread concerning it. Tuition at Humber for a US student is a fraction of what your tuition would be at Berklee or Belmont
