Hello,

I just realized that it may have been better for me to apply with an undecided major instead of the CoC, as I don't have a math lvl II subject test and my chemistry test score isn't that strong. Although my application is meant to show my science-side, would it have been beneficial to apply undecided? And is there a way I can change my major, such as submitting a new application?

Do you mean undeclared in L&S?

Note that you can major in chemistry, but not chemical engineering, in L&S.

Changing into the CoC after enrolling is described at http://chemistry.berkeley.edu/student_info/undergrad_info/policies/change_of_college.php , although it does not indicate how difficult that may be.

@flancakes … Well, it’s easier to get into L&S than CoC, so if the goal was to get into Cal, then yeah, it probably would have been beneficial to apply to L&S Undeclared. But if what you wanted was a major that is offered only in CoC, then what you did was the way to go.

Sorry, it’s too late to change your major. But don’t beat yourself up about it … it could work out for you. Berkeley looks at the entire application. I have no inside knowledge about how important subject test scores are, but I can tell you my kids did well, but not stellarly. Good luck!

@mothergoldenbear Shoot. If I get rejected from CoC, will berkeley give me a chance to study in the L&S? I heard about someone being rejected from CoE, but they were still offered admissions… not sure if its true or not.

You already applied. Don’t worry about it. I’m sure you applied to CoC for a reason in the first place and should be reflected in your application.

I don’t think there are even a handful of people who are on the bubble that they are good enough for L&S but not good enough for CoE or CoC whatever. It’s always a safe bet to apply that what sounds most relevant and interesting to you.

Worry about it later if you do happen to get rejected. I know you applied to CoC because you wanted to be there, so don’t feel any bad about it.

@flancakes Berkeley doesn’t look at alternate majors, so one either gets accepted into their first choice, or one doesn’t get accepted. It’s harsh, I know. I didn’t like that aspect either, but I believe UCLA does it too. There’s not much you can do, so stay busy and keep your mind off it. If you get in, you’ll be very happy you applied to CoC. If you don’t, then you’ll go to another college on your list, and you’ll like it there and forget all about Cal. It really does happen.

I have never heard of someone being rejected from CoE and being offered admissions to a different college, and all the admissions people I’ve ever talked to say it can’t happen.

I hope it works out for you!

I applied for ChemE in the CoC last year and I got rejected from UCLA,USC, Stanford and others but was waitlisted at Berkeley and spent a month in disarray waiting to hear Berkeley’s final decision until I eventually got in and I must say that it was definitely worth taking that risk in applying to the CoC. Even though I might’ve gotten into a lot more schools if I had put down an easier major, I’m extremely grateful to be studying ChemE here at Berkeley.
