If I selected chemical engineering as my major, is it harder to get in than if i applied undeclared?

From what I understand, the College of Chemistry and the College of L&S have about the same admission standards. However, my advice is to apply undeclared L&S then switch into Chemical Engineering, since they accept almost everyone for major transfers during the fall of your freshman year.

The general chemistry series required in the College of Chemistry is not easy. So take Chem 1A instead of Chem 4A your first semester. If you like the subject, then go ahead with transferring into Chemical Engineering, since the major accepts Chem 1A as a substitute for Chem 4A if you transferred. If you don't like Berkeley chemistry, this leaves you with many more options.

Oh, i heard it was hard to transfer majors, especially engineering.. Also my personal statement is focused on my chemical engineering, would it be weird if i wrote about chemical engineering, and selecting chemistry in L&S as my major?

I think that's mainly to the CoE.

Perhaps a bit, though not too strange since you're still choosing chemistry. But if that's the case, why not just apply directly to the College of Chemistry? As was said, it and L&S have about the same admission standards.

Probably not, or if it is, not by a large margin. Undeclared engineering, though, would produce a drastically different result (it's much more competitive).

hmm i see.. ok i'll put chem engineering as my major.

No, definitely not. For transferring into the College of Engineering, you need to wait at least a semester depending on your intended major. The more impacted majors (EECS, BioE) requires at least two semesters of coursework for evaluation before you're eligible to apply for transfer.
