choral opportunities for non music major

Northwestern is one of my daughter's top choices. She loved the campus and loves the strong academics and availability of music programs. Are the choral programs limited to music majors or can non music majors participate equally. She is strong enough vocally to be a music major but doesn't wish to pursue a music degree. I've heard some schools with conservatories limit performing groups to music majors. Any info out there?

Sam Lee~
YOU are a very dear person-and NU CC is very lucky to have your involvement.
THANK YOU for taking the time to research and post.

My pleasure :)

She is preparing audition repertoire with the thought of making a tape or DVD for admission as singing is her main extracuricular. Can she preaudition to assess her eligibility for the aforementioned ensembles. Thank you BTW, Sam, for your thorough response.

Hi Singer Moma-
What major/school does your daughter plan to apply to?
Others on this forum can correct me if I am wrong…but…I do not believe NU uses auditions/tapes in their admissions. My daughter, Theater major, did not audition-nor did she send in tape or DVD. It was strictly application/LOR’s. Now…one of her LORs was from the head of the Drama dept…
You can check w/admissions to make sure.

responding to the last post, if student is applying to Bienen School of Music one must assuredly do a full application to Bienen, including music resume, letters of rec, etc. The instrument I am most familiar with about was pre-screened consistent with other top schools of music and conservatories (requirements and procedure should be seen on website, I don’t know if they get altered each yr or not) and IF one passed pre-screening, then one was invited to competitive audition live on campus.
Then when one arrives on campus in the fall, one has new rep received over the summer to audition with for ensemble chair placement (ensemble availability for music majors will vary per instrument, # of older students, and other factors). The rep I saw was not easy.
On the other hand, to audition for ensembles that accept some non-music majors, I believe the auditioning happens the first week or so of school and is a more informal process.
Still, marching band has its own scheme that can be checked out.
