Christian Colleges offering Music Education

Does anyone know of any Christian schools with decent Music Ed programs? I know Cairn University (Philadelphia Bible College) has one. Any others? And how competitive are they?

If you want to come out West, Seattle Pacific and George Fox (Oregon) are lovely Christian schools offering music education.

Some of the ones we looked at were: Messiah, Grove City, and Campbell University. We did like each of these schools. My son is a Music Ed major at Campbell.

Thank you all :)

sheepster-Is Seattle Pacific a somewhat conservative school? Or are they like many colleges in that they are lenient on parties with alcohol and drugs?

schmee-How rigorous were the auditions at Campbell?

barrons-Thank you for the link! Liberty is one of my top schools. The article gave me so much more information :)

The auditions at Campbell were similar to the other places my son applied. I am going back a few years but I think it was basically two contrasting pieces. Pretty relaxed atmosphere. My son did get a scholarship based on the audition.

Thank you

Yes, I would say Seattle Pacific is somewhat conservative.
Not as lax as many, but not as strict as a typical Bible college.

Gordon College, MA is a Christian college with an excellent music education program. Dr. Doneski has won every professional award from the MA Music Educators Association and a lead organizer for the annual All-State Conference in past years. The campus is really beautiful too.

Wheaton College (Illinois, not MA) is another Christian college with a good music education dept. A student I know who’s a good singer and cellist (father’s a minister) decided to attend Wheaton.

Houghton College (NY) http://www.houghton.edu/music/</a></p>

Belmont http://www.belmont.edu/music/degrees/music_undergraduate/music_education.html</a></p>

Thank you for that

Thank you for that

Concordia College (Moorhead, MN) has a great Music Education program with many performance opportunities as well: <a href=“Music At Concordia | Moorhead, MN | Concordia College”>Music At Concordia | Moorhead, MN | Concordia College.
Concordia is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and takes its role as being a college of the church quite seriously.

I’m considering Concordia @Bekp2018‌ . What is your opinion on their overall atmosphere? (conservative/liberal, honor code, strict rules, ECT)

It’s mainline Lutheran–so I would say slightly more liberal on some issues, but given where many of the students come from geographically, conservatives would also feel at home. I know of both faculty & students who were comfortable enough to come out as gay during their years there. It is a dry campus, and currently there are intervisitation rules (what hours men are permitted to visit on women’s dorm floors & vice versa), but apparently those are under review. It’s mission does permeate throughout both academics & student life, but it definitely is not as rigid in its approach as some of the southern evangelical colleges (Bob Jones, Patrick Henry, Bryant, etc.). Disclaimer–have family member employed there, so not completely unbiased.

Here are good lists:

Northwestern College (IA) is a small Christian liberal arts college that offers a Music Education degree. More details can be found on line: www.nwciowa.edu

Some names that come to mind:
-Balwin-Wallace - definitely one of the top
-Augsburg
-Capital
-DePaul -which is Catholic, but diverse. My tour guide told me 30 or 40% of the population is Catholic.
-Duquesne -also Catholic
-Seattle Pacific

Also from my research:
-BYU - good Christian school with decent-sized music and education programs.
-Maryville - not sure about this one but might be worth looking into
-Molloy - Catholic, but I believe they have a strong music program
-Pepperdine - very good and very Christian school.

Hope this helps. Good luck:)
