Thanks. Yes the winds are to come on Friday.

Here in central Iowa we are getting snow today and high winds through the weekend, blizzard conditions through Saturday. minus 45 degrees with the wind chill.

Schools were cancelled for tomorrow already yesterday. Some schools are already cancelled for Friday. Friday was to be the last day of school before break, so I guess the break got extended.

We are flying back to NYC on Friday from Caribbean. I am not sure if we’ll have an issue, but I told D1 that it’s not the worst thing to be stuck down in the Caribbean.

We had that happen back in 2014 when BWI was essentially closed. Really “rough” having to spend that extra day starting at Caribbean water and palm trees… Fortunately our schedules back home were flexible.

I’ve been visiting my ill sister this week, helping with care and transportation to her treatments. Scheduled to fly home (EWR to CLT) Friday afternoon.:woman_facepalming:t3::woman_facepalming:t3::woman_facepalming:t3:

As if travel on the Friday of a holiday weekend isn’t bad enough, now add in the storm!

One town (suburb) just north of Denver had the temp drop from 44 degrees at 4:03 to 15 degrees at 4:16. The weather reporter said he’d never see it drop that fast.

It is currently -6, and @abasket 's post just reminded me to go open the cabinets under the kitchen sink and aim the space heater at the pipes. Thanks.

Seems like we have a miserable thread like this every year…as college students are coming home and families are trying to move around.

I hope everyone gets where they need to be!!

I am staying home from work today. My boss says I am an essential worker and should go. I said that I am no good to anyone dead. I am a property manager at an apartment complex for people 62+. I am not a health care worker. I have my vendors phone numbers and one of my residents has keys to the boiler room and the maintenance room. Why am I essential and have to be there?

I take a stretch of I-80 to get to work. The weather people said it is mostly impassable and that there is a tow ban in effect, if I go off the road my car will stay there until probably Monday.

I will use PTO and stay home, warm and safe.

Good for you for staying home versus listening to your miserable boss. What a jerk! Let’s risk your life driving when you can work from home just as efficiently.

We moved away from the “totally screwed” region awhile ago. The last time I went home our high was in the single digits; I am not built for the cold anymore :joy: It’s going to be 10-12° here in SC tomorrow into Saturday with wind chills below zero, and they’re calling for flash freezes. Houses here aren’t built for these temps. The upcoming temps will mean lots of frozen/burst pipes and power outages. Many have electric heat, so we’re under a power outage warning from a possible grid overload. We’re from PA, so we came with our generators in tow. We always have our propane tanks and gas cans full. We have a wood fireplace, so I stocked up on firewood. I used to think nothing of cold and snow at home, but it’s definitely different here. They just don’t have the infrastructure; we had 8" of snow last year, but they don’t have salt storage, fleets of spray trucks to pretreat roads or snowplows. Many here don’t even have winter coats. We’ll be ok, but I worry about others in our area.

It’s about 5F in Davenport at the moment and the snow is coming in sideways. Fun!

It is a veritable heat wave for you, I am just 3ish hours west of Davenport and our high for the day was -4, currently falling.

This! I’m in southern VA and we are the same. My dept does the snow detail. We have ~20 plows for 45 square miles. And when I say plows, I mean blades attached to our garbage trucks. I think we have a couple real ones. I’m lucky I’m not on snow detail anymore. I used to have to work Dispatch from 7pm-7am and listen to all of the angry people calling in.

And two of those years I was very pregnant and the office was not smoke free. All the workers smoked and the was so thick. I’m allergic to it, so I’d lose my voice. Yuck.

We have gas heat at home, but you need electricity for the boiler to run. Hopefully the house will be ok, as we won’t be there.

Eesh, nice. We’re down to 2 now, and wind chill is at -18.

Stop sending us your weather, Canada. That’s where we need to build a wall – a very high one. hehe

Or… deploy a bunch of giant fans to blow their weather back to them.

Stay warm and safe, everyone! We’re looking at a solid 24+hours of torrential rain and dangerous winds, followed by a significant temp drop, though nothing like what some of you are reporting.

We’re heading to Charleston the day after xmas. Although it will be warmer there than here, it still looks unseasonably chilly for most of our stay. Not going to complain about temps in the high 40s/low 50s, though…obviously it could be (and will be) so much worse many other places.

17F here in Seattle. Snow and ice on the ground, and freezing rain in the forecast. I feel your pain. :frowning: Hang in there everyone! Stay safe and warm.

We have a wood burning fireplace but haven’t burned in it for probably 3-4 years. H was mentioning that would be an option if we lost power. I THINK we had it cleaned after the last season we burned. It makes me nervous to burn without it being checked recently. Hope we don’t have to entertain that thought!

I’m in GA and have family visiting Scotland now… it will be colder in GA than Edinburgh over the next few days. They aren’t rubbing that in at all. LOL They left at just the right time!

For the first time, I “winterized” my outdoor faucets in preparation for the next few days of constant below-freezing weather. We aren’t expecting any snow so it will just be cold and annoying… if a white Christmas was forecast I’d be very excited! But we will cozy up, have a fire and cocktails so should survive. Heehee

Predicted low was -6, and I woke up to -12. But no wind and sun so not too bad. Dog went out for 10 seconds. My brother (lives across the street) was shoveling (only 2-3") my driveway and walk so the mailman can get in. Poor mailman. Of course it is trash day too, but no wind meant the barrels didn’t tip over.

But it is COLD. They opened the Coliseum (an older arena where they hold the Stock Show rodeos, so it’s not that warm) for a shelter for homeless and others who need a place. I’m pretty sure they can bring their pets which is often a barrier to homeless agreeing to go to a shelter. We just had a group arrive from El Paso because Texas can’t provide shelter for all those crossing the border. I wonder what they think of our cold welcome.

Where are you located @twoinanddone ?

Gotta be so careful with our pups in this weather - no leisurely walks that’s for sure!
