Christmas Week Storm/Deep Freeze

Because I’m not worried about it enough, why not start a thread on the incoming storm(s) that seem like they will take a toll on a lot of the country from north to south (not sure how far west, but also to EAST).

A bummer for sure for people traveling no matter what mode. There are sure to be delays car or plane, dead car batteries, wind damage, power outages, lots of “ugh”.

Maybe post what you are expecting or getting. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst!

And if you are in an area that will be sunny and warm, be kind and don’t let us know.

My 2 daughters have moved up their traveling upstate to tomorrow night so they should be ok. Worries turn to brother and fam hoping to drive in for Christmas from NYC to Ohio and D’s BF driving upstate in Ohio on Sunday morning. :crossed_fingers:   :snowflake: :cloud_with_rain:

Already getting snow and it’s been bitterly cold since last weekend. Thankfully S flew in last night. I don’t know if he would have gotten in otherwise.

Safe travels to all. Hopefully this will not be as bad as predicted.

We live in the deep south and are expecting rain tomorrow followed by single digit lows for two nights and lows in the teens for two or three more nights. I hope there won’t be problems with icy roads as most people down here are not used to driving in winter conditions.

This is expected to be the coldest weather here since 1989. That Christmas we had some very rare snow in FL. My kids were ecstatic. If we get snow this week, our GD will be thrilled.

:zipper_mouth_face: Ok, I won’t talk about weather here……

(But I’d love to see snow pix posted!)
A woman can dream of pretty white stuff!!!

It feels like the whole country besides Maine will get snow!! And we want it! Sigh.

I wish I could send you some @MaineLonghorn

I think you might think twice about that if it’s combined with below zero actual temps and winds 50+ mph…it’s not just snow that is going to cause havoc.

Oh we love big storms. We just stay inside and enjoy them.

Hoping my oldest and his wife stay safe trying to get here in VA from OH. He was going to check with his workplace to see if he could leave early. Time will tell. After here they’re traveling further south to see DIL’s family and friends from where they used to live in NC/GA, so besides seeing them ourselves, I’m hopeful they can make it to see everyone. They’ve been looking forward to this trip for a bit now.

We’re already in VA so will have no travel problems ourselves. Roads were already crowded yesterday when we came. I don’t know how many of those were beating the storm by traveling earlier. It was our planned day to travel to try to avoid crowds. I think we’re just getting rain then super cold (for the area) here.

This storm reminds me of the one in the animated show, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer… shutting down Christmas.

We had to travel to Maryland last weekend so after that, we drove down to OH to stay with D for the holidays. So, we won’t be traveling for the holiday luckily. Not looking forward to the single digit high temperature numbers they are forecasting for the weekend. D was thinking we would do an igloo at a brewery - NOT if the temperatures are that low. I am staying indoors

Just supposed to get rain and strong winds here in Maryland then as soon as the rain moves out, we get bitterly cold temperatures for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! So unfair! I’d love a white Christmas. They are very rare here.

I do feel for those who have travel plans that will be affected by the weather.

The PNW got hit with a storm earlier this week, a foot+ of snow and we are not an area with regular winter snow. It’s generally a storm or two and we wait to melt out, not a lot of plowing. We happen to live at the bottom of a hill which is a tough one, no one has been up it yet, though several tried and went in the ditch.

All those UPS packages that say they are being delivered today, are not. It’s been sub 20F since about Monday and might warm up enough Friday to begin thawing, but it’s hard to know if there will be enough time to see that actually happen.

Not sure about that final Christmas weekend grocery shop nor the ability of family to get here…I should be prepping now, but am leery to begin, in case it’s all delayed. Our neighborhood microclimate and terrain generally leaves us as one of the last places to regain access to the outside world. But it’s gorgeous.

Just a reminder that this is not a storm whine about having to shovel some snow or having to bundle up…many areas could be dealing with power outages, no heat, frozen pipes (even in Florida), dangerous winds resulting in damage, difficult road conditions even for emergency vehicles…

All the more reason I hope S/DIL make it here. They haven’t bought a generator yet. They survived the last power outage (in OH - 2 days) by using their range and gas fireplace, lighting both by hand.

Though now that I think about it, if they aren’t there to light those by hand, I hope their pipes don’t freeze…

The house is always warmer than outside (hopefully!) - have them open up cupboard doors under their sinks and anything else that will help those pipes have exposure to warmer air! Before they leave!

My niece is here (nyc metro) and is supposed to fly back to Chicago on Friday…

CT here. Temps are supposed to be 50 or so…then plummet to the 20’s and then lower for the weekend. Like @MaineLonghorn we aren’t supposed to get more snow. And really, if it rains all day Thursday and Friday as forecast, what is on the ground is going to all melt.

I’m more concerned about the forecast for very high winds. Really, I don’t care much what happens outside as long as we don’t lose power!

Planes fly in pouring rain, right? We are supposed to fly to Austria tomorrow evening from the DC area. It’s not supposed to snow. Possibly some light ice for an hour in the morning before switching to rain.

There’s only one flight a day so if it cancelled, I dunno what we will do. At least we have 5 days booked in vienna before moving on…

And still also paranoid about H giving us all pink eye. Ugh. My eye is throbbing, but when doesn’t it.

It is odd that this week will be colder in southern Virginia than Austria! I only bumped my heat down from 65 to 64 just in case we lose power. When we went to Mexico 5 years ago, temps were in the low 10s for a week. When we came back, our boiler had broken. Our house was 37! We were super lucky no pipes froze in our 110 year old house.

Yes, I’m a big ball of stress. Anyone who wants to talk me down from the ledge will be much appreciated.

I think high wind would be more of an issue than rain, but looking at the forecast, winds in DC tomorrow don’t look bad.
