Ci-hw?

Hey guys,

I'm an incoming freshman, and my question is about CI-HW classes. Due a serious lapse in judgment that caused me to register for the FEE the same weekend I was moving across the country, I wasn't able to finish the essays and therefore did not turn it in. I'm under the impression that since I didn't turn it in, and therefore it wasn't graded, that I'm eligible to take the pencil-and-paper make up exam at orientation. However, a friend of mine that's currently a sophomore there suggested I forgo taking the exam and just sign up to take a CI-HW regardless. Her reasoning was that I'm a fairly competent writer (IMO) and have already had two college level writing-intensive courses, so a CI-HW should be pretty easy, and it would also allow me stand out since most people in the class wouldn't be all that great at wrtiting (in theory). However, I'm not really sure if I should really trust her advice. The rest of my schedule is probably going to be pretty tough, so an easier HASS might be a good option, but I'm still conflicted. Any advice you guys have would be great!

Thanks!

It’s not a disaster to take a CI-HW if you don’t finish the FEE/don’t get a 5 on AP English  You’re required to take two CI-H’s anyway, the only thing that CI-HW means is that one of your CI-H’s will be limited in choice.

You could ask for a retake of the FEE and explain your circumstances, but taking a CI-HW would be fine :)

Yea… I’m not necessarily opposed to taking a CI-HW rather than a CI-H or another HASS in general, it’s just that the CI-HW offerings don’t seem all that interesting compared to others.
Is it realistic to say that CI-HWs are somewhat easier than typical HASS classes? I would think the writing requirement would make it harder.

Any suggestions for interesting/easy (or both) CI-HWs?

I dont’ think you have to worry about the difficulties of CI classes. They’re marked as CI and so they know a large chunk of the student body will have to take it, so they’re not going to make it too difficult.

I actually think though it would be worse to take a CI-HW because they will probably emphasize writing mechanics even more, which might be kind of annoying.

If not for anything else, taking a CI-H might just be more interesting for you in any case, IMO.

Yeah, the CI-HW requirement boils down to, “If you get out of it, you have more flexibility to do interesting things.” I would attempt to get out of it/ask for a retake, but I wouldn’t call it a disaster either way :)
