I was wondering if anyone could tell me more about the Cicerones. Im thinking of applying and want to know if its really selective and how the whole application process is?

Also, is it like other clubs where being in a certain fraternity or sorority
guarantees you a spot?

No I dont think being in a certain fraternity or sorority gaurnentees you a spot.

Theres the two forums, one in fall which is just an information session and then the one in spring which is next Tuesday.

I think on Tuesday everyone gets applications and once you turn it in you schedule an interview time. They are pretty selective, I think they only take about a 100 and many more apply. The interviews are also not supposed to be like regular business like interviews, I dont know how to describe it, I think the example I heard was you can walk in and your interviewers will be sitting wherever they want in the room (tables, etc).

Their main job is to give tours of the school. They oversee the Student Alumni Association and sit with prospective football players at football games. Thats all I can think of off the top of my head.

As kristendotcom said, frat/sorority can help because you will have connections in already but its not guaranteed. Joining an organization will probably give you similar odds. Cicerones is really selective. I think the numbers were ~800 applicants and 70-80 selected. They love to brag about there numbers and how selective they are. Personally I think they are glorified tour givers, but thats just me. The interviews are not typical from what I hear. My friends said they will make you do stuff like sing a song that represents you and stuff.

If thats what they do than its not that different from some other student groups interviews. My friend applied for freshmen leadership council and they made her sing her favorite song. And sang along with her.

I dont know why being a tour guide is so bad, asmaj, I was a tour guide for my high school and it was a lot of fun and made me feel really connected to my school. If I was any good at interviewing I would apply.

Also, I did not say that being in a frat or sorority helps you. I have two sisters who are in cicerones and it wont help any of us when we go apply.

I dont think tour guides are a bad thing. I have given many tours for high school and some middle school students through another group on campus. I just think people put cicerones to a higher level than I think they are. I have heard some compare it to getting in to FBK. I dont know the current directors of FLC but many of the past (e.g Josh Jackson who is executive VP is a former FLC director) have been cicerones themselves, so it could explain the similar interview styles. When I referred to frat/soro., I said it can potentially help. If you friend from a club, frat, soro, or organization is VP of membership then I think that could potentially help. I also have to say Anu (the prez) is a very nice person.

Also, good luck with the application process.

I think most compare it was FBK because of what they get to do (hang out with potential football players at the games). Though I think it kinda sucks that here we have to pay to do tours while in private schools the kids that give the tours get paid.

My friend made 500 bucks giving tours during the Fall semester at Pace.
