Cigarettes legal. Weed illegal. What the heck?

Cigarettes are so much more damaging than weed. Would someone explain to me why they weed isn't legal?

(On a side note, I don't smoke.)

Does tobacco make you high? It's a real question, I don't know if cigarettes affect brain activity the same way weed does.

weed would be more damaging if it were made legal, wouldn't it? and heck, why don't we just make everything legal?

and how come no one asks If cigarettes are more damaging than weed, shouldn't it be illegal too?

Weed is illegal cause of xenophobic Americans in the early 20th century and those that continue to hold onto those "American values."

Here's the real deal. The first thing to go during drinking is judgment, but they continue stressing "Drink responsibly." It might be your intention, but after a few it changes rather quickly.

Heh.

edit:

In Doug Stanhope's words:

"There are two types of people who hate drugs. Those who have never done them and those who don't know how to do them correctly."

Weed would still be far less damaging than cigarettes if legal. I was going to ask that question originally, but then realized that the government doesn't want to screw over big business. So, they could either make both legal, or have the cigarette producing companies replace cigarettes with weed. If people want to get high, they're going to get high. Why not reduce the deaths?

how would you know weed would be less damaging? It may make more people addicted, and waste a lot more money. physical health isn't the only type.

and smug, just because you don't hate something, doesn't mean it's not wrong.

Wrong? I don't know, what's wrong about it? It's not like it's hurting anyone else.

I don't smoke, but I know enough people that do to know that no one who wants weed has any difficulty finding it. It could be a very lucrative source of tax revenue if legalized, we'd save money from "the war on drugs", and gangs and criminals would lose a source of income. Seems like a no brainer to me.

I think opiates should be sold in schools next to Hershey bars. This will force parents to do their jobs.

There's no definitive "proof" that cigarettes are worse. I believe in chemistry and physics, but biology, medical science, that stuff has so many parameters and the paradigm has shifted so much. Not saying weed is worse, just don't knock cigarettes.

Famous potheads? Lil wayne (Lol) and Dave Matthews (cool, but weird)

I've been really reactive lately because of weed. Alcohol makes me more confident in contrast :D

Ron Paul: Researchers surprised to find no link between marijuana, lung cancer

Since lung cancer is one of, if not the biggest killer in the United states, I think it's safe to say that cigarettes are more harmful.

Obvious answer is obvious.

Tobacco companies are too important to get sent under, and acceptance of tobacco and alcohol has been ingrained into our society. Marijuana benefits from neither of these.

To answer your question about cigarette effects, Baelor, I haven't ever smoked one, but I have worked with people that do. It supposedly relaxes you, like alcohol. That would mean it is a depressant, I guess.

Adult porn legal, child porn illegal. What the heck?

Does tobacco make you high?

[/quote]

Yes. It's called nicotine. People don't smoke because they love the smell of burning benzene.

Marijuana is illegal because of the culture it seemingly represents: hippies, stoners, inner city blacks, etc. It is no more harmful, and perhaps even less so, than cigarettes, but since a lot of middle-aged white-class suburbanites smoke cigarettes, the substance isn't demonized.

But as the baby boomers die out and marijuana becomes more mainstream, I think it will become so accepted that politicians can openly admit to using it without fearing backlash.

Just because politicians admit to using it doesn't mean that it will be legalized. Oftentimes when politicians mention past drug use, it's used in a way to showcase their previous immaturity and poor judgment and then contrast that with their current, allegedly more responsible attitude. Marijuana use is used by politicians to exemplify childish irresponsibility; it is never said in a proud way, only in a way to show that the politician is human, makes human mistakes, and learns from them. There is no way that such negative attitudes towards marijuana use would pressure it to be legalized. The only reason the government would legalize marijuana was if they knew that they could have a monopoly on it or have the ability to tax it heavily (like cigarettes).

Also, baby boomers aren't the only ones who would prefer not to legalize marijuana.

Other than Barack Obama, what other politician has admitted to using marijuana and enjoying the high from it (so Bill Clinton doesn't count)? This is an honest question because I don't know.

No, but they are probably the largest generational group that does. And younger people who also oppose marijuana are probably taking cues from the baby boomer culture wars.

Well, cigarettes should be made illegal also. Just because one bad thing is legal doesn't mean that all bad things should be legal.

Obama admitted to using cocaine and to me that's enough to show his judgment.

Weed is way less than dangerous than cigarettes. I find it interesting that country like the Netherlands with legalized use of small amounts of marajuana (and legal prostitution, for that matter) has so much less crime than the United States does, yet we continue to espose the horrors of pot. I say take a cue from the Dutch: crack down on cigarettes, loosen up on weed.

Obama admitted to using cocaine in his youth. Everyone has bad things in their past they aren't proud of. It's not like he was saying, "oh yeah, I used to snort coke, no biggie". he said, "Yes, I have done some not-so-good things in my past, it was a mistake." which to me shows that he's a real person who can admit when they are wrong and show that they can change for the better.

McCain thought the Iraq War was justified and would be a cinch and that's enough to show his judgment.

But the surge! Bob Woodward's new book clear shows that the surge was just a part, and not even the most significant one, of a greater whole that contributed to lesser violence.

lmfao

Once again, the only people who hate drugs are the ones who have never used them and the ones who don't know how to use them correctly.

Alcohol is a drug and without a doubt one of the most dangerous ones (please don't get on your rant from high school health class). It should be banned and more moderate drugs should be brought in.

Drugs have been found in, I believe, every civilization known to man. You're on the wrong side of the argument if you believe drugs are wrong. If drugs are wrong, alcohol is as well.

Drop your relativist theory and open your damn minds.
