Cincinnatus

Our son got a letter say he had the $2000 award, and if he accepted the invitation to attend the Cincinnatus competition, he would get at least $3500 (or was it $3800?) just for showing up.

He actually won a higher award, which surprised me a little. The competition seemed pretty steep.

Anyway, yes, it was by invitation.

Taxguy - you were right!

We received a letter today that notified us that my son will receive and extra $3000 Cincinnatus Out-of-State Award in addition to the basic $2000 Century Scholarship.

We are pleased.

Drae27- that was a nice surprise, wasn’t it? We had the same reaction!

Drae I am glad I was right for your sake. Congrats on the money and to your son. He must be a very special kid. It does make you feel great, doesn’t it?

Mommusic - What were your son’s ACT scores and GPA if you don’t mind me asking? I just want an idea of how competitive it is and what kind of scores one needs to get an invitation. Let me know! thanks

Smashley–he had a 35 on the ACT, GPA of 4.2 something. So he was at the high end, but one of his friends who was invited was not as good in math (but a better writer) so I’m guessing her ACT was lower, and her GPA would have been lower as well b/c she didn’t take as many weighted APs as my son.

But I have no idea what the cutoff would be, or if they look at more than test scores & GPA.

My son had a 34 ACT, gpa of 4.4 weighted and 4.0 unweighted, and a class rank in the top 1%, but was only offered the $3500 after the Cincinnatus competition. But that was in 2009 and the amount of awards has changed since then. He ended up going to Miami University on the full-ride Harrison Scholarship.
My second son has a 32 ACT and is applying to the DAAP program. We are hoping he will be invited to the Cincinnatus competition this year. He is in the top 1% of his class with an unweighted gpa of 3.9 and a weighted of 4.2. I know of someone three years ago that had a 28 ACT who was not invited to the scholarship competition.

According to the UC website, a student with a 3.2 HS unweighted GPA will be offered a minimum scholarship. The site also says that:

" Scholarship offers or invitations to compete will be mailed to the highest achieving students in their selected academic program. Based on institutional enrollment goals, additional students may be invited at the discretion of the university."

Besides URM…what do you think qualifies as “institutional enrollment goals”? Any chance a non-Ohio student with a 3.2 and a 25+ ACT admitted to McMicken would get invited (for geographic diversity?)

“institutional enrollment goals”–geographic diversity, maybe. URM for sure, also students planning to major in whatever program they want to strengthen.

Reviens, UC is an interesting school. Some programs, notably, DAAP and CCM , are EXTREMEMLY well known and tough to get admtted to. Thus, I think the paragraph that you quoted means that you need a minimum of 3.2 GPA to get the scholarship PLUS, you have to be among the top applicants of that school! Thus,I would bet that it you would need a significantly higher GPA for a DAAP applicant than for an applicant to the School of Arts and Science.

This was NOT always the case. As long as you had the minimum 3.2, you usually got the Cincinnatus. UC is now becoming more selective than ever and is awarding the Cincnnatus to more selective applicants than they did even four years ago.

My daughter has been invited to the Cincinnatus Scholarship Competition. Can someone have any information on the format of the competition? What exactly do the expect? Is it an essay? Is it some form of a standardized test?

If she attends UC, she will be in Industrial Design in DAAP.

Thanks.

ppk007–congrats to your D for the Cincinnatus invite as well as the acceptance to DAAP! Pretty select company.

The competition (if it is run as in the past) consists of an essay (my son is not a fabulous writer but he said the topic was ok) and a group activity. Some sort of creative thing that they observe you organizing/doing it to see what sort of leadership skills you have, as nearly as I can tell. My son ended up getting $6000 from Cincinnatus (in addition to the NMF tuition/room scholarship.)

I think they use your application portfolio as well as what they learn about you on the day of the competition.

Good luck!

mommusic,

Thank you! That’s great information.

We are coming from California so before we made the investment, I wanted to make sure that we are prepared.

Have a question: What is a “Pre-Architecture program at DAAP/UC”? Understand that somehow it is an alternate route to “DAAP Architecture program” for those who didn’t make a cut as “direct”! Will immensely appreciate details of this program. Thanks…
