"Cinco de Drinko" does not equal cultural respect

Friday is Cinco de Mayo and across the country people will be making fun of Mexican culture. Please step up and speak up. It is not ok.

This past weekend at Baylor:

"…Students at the Saturday party hosted by Baylor’s Kappa Sigma chapter wore sombreros and serapes, according to images circulating on Twitter.
Others dressed as construction workers and wore brown faces, according to student reports, and attendees chanted, “Build that wall,” …
"…And as tired as you are of hearing about racism, we’re tired of experiencing it.”

While I am fully aware that Cinco de Mayo is considered a “drinking” holiday here in the US, similar to St. Patrick’s day, I was not aware that it had taken on a tone of disrespecting the Mexican culture. So initially I was confused as to why it was a big deal that this fraternity had a Cinco de Drinko party. And I am still a bit confused as to why sombreros and serapes would be considered disrespectful. However dressing up as maids and gardeners is more obvious and the “brown face” makeup clearly crosses the line by a mile.

It only became a drinking holiday in the 1980-90’s when the booze and restaurant businesses found a holiday to market around.

I will let you spend the time on the internet finding out about cultural stereotypes/costumes and how they are harmful. I bet there is a lot of information about that

Stuff like this always reminds me of Cinco de Cuatro for some reason.

The brown face and the wall chanting is extremely disgusting.

Bumping this back up because today is the 5th.

Friends don’t let friends act like racist idiots. Speak up if something happens on your campus tonight.
