Citizenship Question

I am currently a citizen of China, and a permanent resident of Canada. On the common app, if I put down China for my citizenship, will it affect my chances, and group me with the millions of Chinese? I know that some universities do not count Canadians as international, so I was considering becoming a Canadian citizen, however my parents are not willing. Is there anything I can do?

Are you applying to universities in Canada? If so, a permanent resident is considered the same as a citizen regarding fees and the pool your application is a part of.

If you’re applying to the US, you’ll be a considered an international student whether you’re Canadian or Chinese. Anyway, if you don’t have Canadian citizenship yet you can’t put yourself down as a Canadian.

Becoming a Canadian citizen is likely to take between two and three years at the moment, so even if it made a difference, you wouldn’t be able to take advantage of it for a while.
