City College of San Francisco or Skyline Community College?

I am dismissed from UC Davis due to getting four F's my freshmen year. I now have to take the Physics, Biology, Math, and Chemistry classes at a community college. If I get a 3.1 or above in those classes, I am guaranteed readmission to UC Davis. I live in San Francisco with my parents, and Skyline takes two hours to get to by public transportation (on a good day). I don't have a car, and my dad said insurance is too expensive for someone my age (19 years old).

I know that CCSF is crazily impacted, but how much more compared to Skyline? Do you think it is worth the long commute to go to Skyline? I've also heard that CCSF has a new campus opened in SF chinatown.... do you think that will help? Do you have an experiences of either college to share? Any advice and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I liked all of my classes at CCSF. But registration for fall has already started so you need to apply now. Are you just staying for one semester? You may not be able to get every single specific class but you might. You would definitely get all 4 in 2 semesters.

I am staying for much more than one semester. i reckon that it would take me at least 2 years to finish the series of Chemistry, Physics, Math, and Biology. Thanks for your help.

Anyone else?

I don’t know much about the community colleges in San Francisco, but I do know some people who took the caltrain from SF to the Mountain View Station to take classes at Foothill College. Since all of the classes at Foothill were only 2 or 3 days a week, they found them pretty manageable. Also, fall registration has not started yet (will being late July).

Then stay at CCSF. You’ll soon gain enough priority to register first for all of your classes. Apply now, you may still be able to get classes. I know that all of the math classes have available sections right now.

There is even a calculus class offered in china town, if you would rather take it there. I think that’s the section I’m going to register for, but I’m not sure yet.

Thank you very much for your help and input, Shannon. I am confused by one thing, though. There are so many campuses for CCSF. Were all or most of your classes taken at the main campus (Ocean)? I am scared that I would have to travel across the city to take different courses in one day. lol

I looked at the class schedule and catalog, and they don’t state in which campus the classes are located… only in which hall… like “Baltimore Hall”. So I’m assuming that all classes are in one campus unless stated other wise… right?

Thanks everyone else for your help and input as well.

fantastica, do you know which caltrain those students from San Francisco took? I tried using the trip planner on 511transit.org, but when I typed in the address of Foothill college, it couldn’t find it. Maybe because it’s not part of the Bay Area.

It’s part of the bay, actually. I know they take the train on - 700 4th St., San Francisco 94107 (the one near union square) - and then stop at the ‘Mountain View’ Station (Zone 3). When you get off at Mountain View, there is a bus circle right in front the station. You take Bus 52 (ten minutes ~), which takes you straight to Foothill College (Los Altos Hills).

All of my classes have been on the Ocean campus. Most of the other campuses only offer specialty sections (like, night or weekend classes for normal classes), or they offer weird certificate programs. I’m not entirely sure, but I think one campus has a lot of nursing classes or something. Your classes will all be at Ocean unless you deliberately choose otherwise.

[City College of San Francisco on brink of closure - SFGate](http://www.sfgate.com/education/article/City-College-of-San-Francisco-on-brink-of-closure-3682955.php)

Keep that in mind.

If CCSF must close down, it seems to me like there would be an influx of students then attending Skyline (since it would be the closest one to SF), which may make it difficult to get classes. It may work out to go to Skyline and ensure yourself that you have a solid registration date instead of having to potentially transfer transcripts over and then have to deal with a bad registration date which may set you back.

Foothill College is about 4.3 miles from the San Antonio Caltrain station; it is about a 38 minute bus ride or 27 minute bicycle ride according to [url=<a href=“http://maps.google.com%5DGoogle”>http://maps.google.com]Google Maps<a href=“put%20in” title=“San Antonio Caltrain to Foothill College”>/url. If you are a runner, you may also be able to run that. Keep in mind that Foothill College is uphill from the Caltrain station if you bicycle, run, or walk there.

One advantage is that it is on the quarter system like UC Davis. But it is still a long commute from where you are. But closer community colleges are likely to be overflowing if CCSF cannot get its various issues sorted out to avoid having to close.

Actually, @fantastica has pointed out a pretty good route. I go to Foothill and literally work right across the Mountain View Caltrain Station. There is a bus in front of the station that takes you straight to Foothill and back (10-15 minutes to get to school depending on traffic). If you do plan on attending Foothill, you can certainly stop at San Antonio Caltrain station as well, but it will take longer (from personal experience lol). Sadly, Google doesn’t point out short cuts.

I hope everything works out with CCSF/Skyline, Annoyinggirl!

Thank you so much, everyone! It means a lot!

Oh no… if CCSF really closes down, it will be the end of the world. But the one in Chinatown just got built… so it would be a shame and a waste if it really closes down so soon…

@Shannon, when did you attend CCSF, and how difficult was it to register for the classes you needed there?

@SBlee483, how difficult is it to register for the classes you need at Foothill college?

Thank you very much.

It wasn’t difficult at all. It should be even easier for you because you have so mang classes to take and youll be there for many semesters. However, like I said, registration has already started so you should apply NOW.

I applied already, but my appointment is on the 31st of this month. :frowning: And most classes I need already have waitlists already. I feel so doomed. On top of that, CCSF might be closing down soon, which leaves Skyline jammed with students. Things are looking so hopeless.

Shannon, when you attend CCSF? For how many years?

Uh, I started registering for classes 2 years ago but I dropped them all. I completed my first class there last Spring, so for registration priority I have basically none, if I had completed a full semester I would have a better registration date. I’m taking more classes there this fall and while some of the classes I wanted to take are full (or at least, the sections I want to take for them are full), most of the classes I want are still open. Specifically, all of the advanced math classes (which you will need to take I believe) still have many open sections.
