Hi everyone!! I kno there have been many threads about this, but which1 will be better for an international student graduating in 2014 from a top 10 engineering school? Honestly speaking I am more interested in Civil engineering but job prospects important as well. I see many ppl discouraging about civil engineering all the time! If the job market is bad for US citizens then its much much worse for us Intl students! On the other hand times hopefully will change by 2014 and I like ME too! So which will give a safer career in terms of job prospects ME or CE

Neither one will give you a “safe” career. Individuals give themselves “safe” careers; hardworking, dedicated people will rarely be out of a job no matter the state of the economy.

No one anywhere will answer your question correctly. You want to be an engineer, start using your brain! No particular career experiences endless growth or boom times; eventually, the job market crashes down or stabilizes (except perhaps professional politician).

The job market for traditional hunter-gatherers has been lousy since 10,000 BCE however there was a very brief period in 1963 CE when the USA and the USSR almost forced the demand for hunter-gatherers to rise sharply.

It depends. Are you going to work here after graduation, or are you planning to return to your home country?

The job market in the U.S. is very bad for civil engineers because of the excess inventory created by the housing bubble. However, not all countries have this problem, and even in the U.S., some areas are hit much harder than others. There are a few civil engineers also work in non-construction related fields, but almost all civil engineering jobs are dependent on the construction industry.

The excess housing inventory will eventually disappear because of population growth. The question is whether population can grow enough by 2014 to reduce the inventory to more reasonable levels. Of course, the inventory can be destroyed by a natural disaster, but the odds of that happening by then aren’t in your favor. And remember, you’ll have to survive that disaster too.
