Can anybody tell me about the civil engineering program at UTK? I am considering to transfer to UTK from Florida Tech and I want to know how strong the program is.

I am going to be a freshmen at UT this fall and I’m considering this as my major. I’m not actually in the college of engineering yet, I’ve been accepted as an undecided student. I will likely apply to the college for my sophomore year. I would also like somebody with more information. How difficult is the major at UT? How large is it? Does it set you up for good job prospects following school? How about internship or work experience opportunities while still in school?

UT has a very rigorous and vibrant Civil & Environmental Engineering department. There are 21 full time faculty members plus a strong group of research and adjunct professors. The main areas within the department are structural, transportation, geotechnical, water, and environmental engineering, which are considered as the core areas. In addition, construction and pavement are also quite strong. Entering students have an average ACT score of 28.8 in 2009. This score has been going up for 8 years in a row.

There are many opportunities to obtain scholarships and financial support. In addition to Hope Scholarship, which is widely available to residents, about a dozen of Civil Engineering students receive Tennessee Road Builders Association scholarships each year. There are other scholarships as well as co-op opportunities. Two students typically get funded for ORAU summer support. Many professors also hire undergraduate students on projects.

Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL) and Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) are both right in the neighborhood of UT. They hire many of UT’s graduates and fund many students. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to pursue interesting areas during your time at UT.

You can find more information at [UTK CEE: Welcome Page](http://www.engr.utk.edu/civil/).

Hope this helps.
