UTK College of Engineering Scholarships for Freshmen?

Does anyone have experience with freshmen receiving scholarships from the College of Engineering? If so, what size offer? My D will be applying to UTK College of Engineering as a freshman entering fall semester 2014, most likely declaring biomolecular-chemical engineering.

Stats:
GPA: 3.86 unweighted/4.25 weighted
32 ACT & taking again this fall

ECs include Mu Alpha Theta, Gov School in computational physics as well as Key Club, Swim Team and others.

Thanks in advance for any light shed.

My S was offered an engineering scholarship this year. $500. He had a UT calculated GPA of 4.35, ACT 34 and Math ACT of 33. (They use the Math score when awarding the engineering scholarships). Lots of EC including Mu Alpha Theta and Top Rankings in State Math Competitions. I was told the top scholarships were awarded to those with 36 in Math on ACT.

He was offered 5X that for engineering scholarship at another (similarly ranked) school, plus free out of state tuition. Sadly, he is not a Vol like his mom and dad.

Wow. Your S has awesome credentials. UTK COE offered an embarrassingly small pittance. D has a 33 Math ACT, a 5 on the AP Calculus AB/BC test and no math competitions. She is in a highly selective STEM research program her senior year. UTK math profs provide oversight/guidance but based on your response, it looks to be a numbers game. Curious. Which university did your S select? We’re a middle of the middle income family with no trust fund and a paltry $15K saved in each D’s college fund. We haven’t qualified for need aid with our older daughter who is a college junior and don’t expect to qualify even with two in college next year.

Is there an SAT equivalent to the ACT for Engineering specific scholarships? I assume the math score is of particular importance.

I don’t have a definitive answer. However, the engineering admissions site shows both ACT and SAT minimums for acceptance to the COE. Good luck ParkTN!

Thanks for the help!

This is all assuming that you are looking in state.

With an ACT near your son’s I received $1500 through the COE my freshman year at UTK and I am currently receiving another $1500 through my specific department (most departments offer scholarships to their students). Yes, this is less then most schools offer, however if your son is an instate student I would suggest applying for the mcwherter scholarship (offered by TSAC, the same group that runs the HOPE). Also, UTK offers automatic scholarships based on ACT for in state students ([Institutional Scholarships | One Stop](http://onestop.utk.edu/your-money/covering-costs/scholarships/institutional-scholarships/)), and with a 32 your son will qualify for $6000 a year through the Volunteer scholarship. Another $1000 is added on for joining the honors program.
