it seems like letters about civil prep just came out, so who all got it?

My letter came thursday night, i am thinking either NMMI or MMI, most likely NMMI though. I am still hopin that I get taken off the NWL, but realistically, I do not see it happening. Good luck to everyone else, hope to see you all at West Point...in another year.

At nmmi this year there are 12 west point preps, about 10 navy, 7 air force, about 20 merchant marine, and about 10-15 coast gaurd preps. West Point, Navy, and Air Force would rather their students not play sports but I think one WP prep played football. Merchant Marine and Coast Gaurd had some preps in football and basketball.

My son got his letter Friday (April 7th). He will most likely pick NMMI. When he gets back from his spring break trip I'll get him to check out this website. The letter he received says West Point offers this option to about 60 candidates per year so you have that number right Astrodude. I don't know about the split between athletes and scholars, but my son is not a recruited athlete.

nmmi may be a pain sometimes, but at least its not in Georgia. Or Alabama. Or anywhere in the south. Besides, NMMI is the least expensive, with the best academics.

oh god...ive defended it.....what have i done?

This is a dumb question but I really need to know: Do the Navy Preps at NMMI join Army ROTC while there? Can they/do they ever do the simultaneous member program with the National Guard or Reserves?

Would it be helpful for Spider to have prescription goggles/glasses like Wileys?

When I was there, Navy or Air Force guys could do the ROTC SMP program in the guard/reserves. From what I understand, they've changed that. I hear from guys in 08/09 that not even West Point preps can do the advanced ROTC program any longer, so I think it has changed a lot.

Wiley's are not all that great, they are overpriced and dont last long. ESS is a much better buy, but all cadets here get issued balistic eyewear now and whether or not you can wear non issued sets depends a lot on your TAC.

No sponsored preps (meaning with scholarships from the Association of Graduates, the Naval Academy Foundation, or the Falcon Foundation) are enrolled in the ECP (early commissioning program), which is the ROTC unit here. But because this is a military school, all preps regardless of academy are enrolled in Military Science 1, which is a really easy course to familiarize you with the Army.

However, Self Preps, those who chose to come to NMMI and re-apply to the academies without scholarship or inclusion in the civil prep program, can join the ROTC program here. I really don't think that applies to a sponsored Navy prep though...

so in short, no, preps don't join rotc.

And don't even worry about having heavy duty glasses like ballistic goggles or whatever they are. The new cadet crap isnt hard, and he'll never really experience anything to necessitate having them.

yeah and make sure if you're a sponsored prep, have your high school final transcripts ready to go...along with immunization records, and that infamous police record check. I got a call from west point literally hours before leaving for nmmi so it was a real hassle getting them in.

I dont remember getting anything from NMMI (or any other schoolK) except brochures from the school. As i remember from last year, you get the civil prep stuff and rank the schools you want to attend. I think the civil prep people take care of getting you into NMMI. The only thing you might need to do is send your transcript. After your prep school accepts you, you will recieve more info (what to bring, when to report, etc) about the school. This is what I remember from last year but it might have changed.

Spidermom, not sure which paperwork you sent in already but here is my story.

My son was notified he got into the civil prep program in early April. Within a few days he got brochures in the mail from each school, this was just generic information with an application form. His first choice was NMMI. After he was notified from the AOG that he got NMMI, he emailed the admisssions contact person to ask if he needed to fill out the application and send the application fee. She replied that he is already accepted into the school so he did not have to send the fee but she did need him to fill out the application form so she could start a file for him. In addition to the form we needed to send: HS transcript, copy of SAT/ACT scores, copy of his immunization record, copy of his medical coverage card, copy of his birth certificate, and the "health and consent" form (which we found on their website). All of this just went to NMMI last week. If you have already sent all of this then I think you are good to go. I assume they send out more detailed information in May or June. If we don't get something by the end of May I am going to tell my son to email the contact person at the school again.

We should keep in touch since we both have sons going to NMMI.
