what can nmmi civil prep students expect on matriculation day this august 4th? any info would be appreciated.

We are wondering the same thing! All the kids with the info are now plebes. See you there, Astrodude11.

Good Luck to NMMI civil prep students! I've met some NMMI alumni who just finished their first year at USNA and they were lookin' good! NMMI prepared them well and they were very successful once they got to USNA.

thanks usna09mom. its good to knwo im not going into this blind alone spidermom.

I will try and remember what happened last year--parent here -.

I recall that there was a presentation the night before at Pearson hall which is on the NE side of campus. In the morning I believe we reported to an area with all the bags labelled .. and as I recall we left them in a pile and then went to the first of about 10 stations.

I think a little bit like any Rday/registraion. One big difference is that as a parent we were able to follow along .. while he did do everything. LAst year they would take groups of about 10 -12 . The experienced cadets --some of which will probably be the HS cadets-- teach them to march and they have them go 'quietly form place to place.' Seems like there were five or six stations. I dont remember them all , but maybe one where you as a parent get a bill, another where there were some extensive forms to fill out. I dont remember them all, but that sort of thing. Seems there were several times when we split off maybe the cadets did regristration or something, About noon we ended up at the barracks (dorms). ( I mmight add they are small.. all the doors open onto an oudoor walkway --like a motel) .. He dtold us he had to go to lunch and we siad our good byes .. I actually found the USMA 90 second deal -easier, but that was it.

I dont remember exactly, but during the mornign as we split off we had a chance to get a starbuck -- forget the hall name but on campus. .. they can get backed up with large groups. They also had a parents club/reception in a nice formal room on campus. also during the day..

I would encourage any support you can give to the parents club. ALso at that time we were able to arrange a 'boodle' set up with the Roswell Symphony guild -Commandant wifes involved, you can set it up --for a cost -- to have ti deleviered on some major hiolidays and at the end of the RAT three weeks.

I will think of some more later and sorry for typos .. but i wanted to get posted

Also sometime late morrning or early afternoon they get there hair cut --it is on campus ... it i closer that WP style. just almost completley shaved.

We were doen and on our way out by about 1pm or 2 pm

As far as matriculation goes, your day will be spent filling out paperwork, meeting your advisor, going over schedules, and collecting your uniforms in several mind-numbing hours in the cadet store and ROTC building, and doing hours and hours of drill with high school cadets.

After matriculation comes RAT (recruit at training) week...

An Average Day During RAT Week:

0600: Corps PT, consisting mostly of push-ups, sit-ups, and the NMMI Shuffle (1 or 2 miles on the NMMI track done at about an 11 minute pace).

0730: Breakfast, (sitting at attention, asking permission to eat, forcing yourself to eat the starchy, fatty, carbohydrate-loaded mess of powdered eggs and whatever meat product they found in the freezer from last year)

0830: Drill, Drill, Drill

1200: Lunch (same as breakfast)

1230: Drill, Drill, Drill

1430: Sitting around your empty barracks sharing high school glory stories with your fellow RATs because the Cadre ran out of things to have you do, or they have tired of drill.

17:30: Dinner (same as Breakfast/Lunch)

1830: Blue Book memorization/Drill/Maybe an Honor Code Training session...or a discussion on not being promiscuous/not raping people.

2200: Taps

Lather Rinse Repeat.

I dont mean to sound bitter about NMMI...it boasts a good academy prep program but the rest of the school is highly disorganized and the general morale of the corps remains at rock bottom for the entire year. Feel free to check out a NMMI alumni association survey that was given to last year's cadets...I'm not the only one that was unhappy with my time there: http://www.gonmmi.com/View%20ResultsE.htm

Re the survey:OUCH!

yeah . I am sure there were problems. The \e survey was not conducted by the alumni assoc, but a seperate small group. however, the alumni did have some concerns which were presented to the board fo dirrectors and supe and commandant. They were concerns, most of which were addressed by the supe in the alumni magazine which i receive. One thing at nmmi it appears even in your year there you will plug into a nice committed alumni group

all the best for matriculation day

Well, we got Spider launched at NMMI. The matriculation was pretty much as you described, rty. Some additions:

-The cadre did a very nice job running things. They were firm, professional, got the "RATS" marching and doing facing movements in short order. They didn't hesitate to drop those who didn't pay attention. We saw several RATS running around shouting funny stuff at the top of their lungs ("Help me Tom Cruise!" or "I have a belly button!"). Looks like the corp is being allowed to discipline RATS more this year.
-Spider's TAC officer said they'd (the staff) been up to watch the WP R day and that they were moving closer to that model.
-Spider has the whitest head of any child I've ever seen.
-I didn't cry once, a major feat. Probably was because I was so relieved to get him away from his late-night, welded-to-the-gf lifestyle he's enjoyed this summer.
-There are over 120 academy preps at NMMI this year. They seem to have a really strong program for them. The guy in charge of fitness has an MA in the subject and used to pitch for the As. The preps should all max the CFA! Preps get an extra dose of time management/study skills training...all good.
-Spider's in November troop with a roomie from Hawaii. Where are all your kids?

Congrats and good luck to Spider! Hopefully the changes they made will make for a better NMMI experience.

We got home late last night.

My son is in HQ company because he is going to do Jazz Band (they put all the band kids in HQ). We did not get to meet the roommate so I have no idea what he is like. Did not get to see son with head shaved. He was in the last group to report and he didn't get to that part prior to us having to part ways. On our way off campus we did go by his barracks and one of the cadre opened his room for us so we could have a look. We also met his TLA who was very nice. The man has a home in Roswell and a home on Whidbey Island here in WA -- Roswell is too hot for his wife and WA is too wet for him so they alternate living in the two places.

I have been doing well since we left him, but do have moments when I get tears in my eyes. This morning was especially hard since we are home now and he isn't here with us, but I'll adjust. I keep wondering...what is he doing right now?

i know exactly which TLA you're talking about! he and I got along very well and he was helpful with whatever I needed

cadet for 7 -- Sounds like my son got a good TLA. After reading the results of the survey you posted, I am a little nervous about what his year will be like. I certainly hope they have made some changes!

NMMI
with our colors flying high
were all in step

i hate knowlege... west point 2011 hooah!

Astrodude...does this mean preps have their computers?!!! What company are you in?

Man - RAT week was pretty easy. We got computers last Sunday and Internet access this morning. Everything else should be a breeze from here.

Oh btw, Astrodude is my roommate :)

West Point huah!!

My roomate and I are in LIMA company/troop. west point HOOAH!!!

and yes, the preps did get their computers. i heard something about there not being enough computers for everyone who needed one but im not sure.

If there wasn't enough computers to go around, I hope my son got one. Classes start tomorrow, don't they?
