Claremont Colleges ... fantasies, reaches, possibles ...?

My daughter loves the Claremont Colleges.

She attends a top NE boarding school has mid range grades, 700's on SATIIs, prob. low 700s on SATI, spent last year abroad, learning the culture and language of a European country. She wants to study languages, cultural anthropology, and film. She is multilingual (if Latin counts!!??) and is starting to pick up another language this summer. She is a humanities person and just gets through math and science. She is a visual/spatial person all the way ... very creative and determined. She is eager to go abroad again. She loved the quiet intensity of Pomona, the unique format/approach at Pitzer and wants a second visit at Scripps because it was deserted when we were there and she did not get a sense of the school. I think all three would work for different reasons and the consortium would be fabulous.

CMC and HM do not seem to be a good match.

Any thoughts about how to approach the group so that she actually gets in to at least one of them!

She should approach them as if she is qualified and genuinely wants to attend their schools. Pitzer and Scripps are pretty generally considered not too much of a reach for any solid student who wants to learn, although, I feel as if both have recently become more difficult to get into. Pomona is one of the hardest schools to get into in the country. If she liked the Claremont schools, I also recommend looking at Occidental College on your next visit to the Los Angeles area. It could be a good fall back for her, if she doesn't get into a Claremont school.

That sounds like my D you're describing! SAT m-650, cr-740, w-780. AP's - US Hisory - 5, English Language - 5, English Lit - 4, Calculus AB - 2! She was accepted to UCB, UCD, UCSD, Santa Clara, USD, USF and Pitzer (will attend). Sounds like your D might be a good fit for Pitzer, but she should try to get into Pomona as well (my D did not, wish she had). D applied regular decision to Pitzer and did not interview (we live in Europe); wasn't interested in Scripps (all girl) and was definitely not a fit for HMC or CMC. Look at the Pitzer website and get a feel for what they're looking for - Pitzer College - Claremont, California
Good luck!

as a claremont native let me tell you that there isnt much to do in claremont. you will definitely need a car here if you want to visit anywhere.

Thank you.

Curiously, do you wish she had applied to Pomona or does your D? Either way, why?

If she applies to Pomona ED because it is a stretch, I am afraid she will miss the chance to get accepted ED either Scripps or Pitzer.

When I get a bit nutty about all of this I realize she could just take a gap year and try again! Also Scripps appears to have January admittance ... so if all fails she go second semester freshman year.

We are also looking into Occidental ...

Karina ... I have a feeling you got out of town for college!

MQD - my D is also looking at Pitzer and Scripps, as well as Occidental. her stats are very similar to your D's.

cutofthejib is right about Pitzer's admit rate (I don't know about Scripps) - it dropped from 37% to 22% over the last two years, with a corresponding increase in avg GPA. Pitzer originally looked like a low match/safety for D - now not so much. sigh.

sarsfield - i've been following your posts and looking forward to reports after your D starts at Pitzer in the fall :)

WOW 22% ... lets all keep posting throughout the year ... There is something very wonderful about the Claremonts ... from the desert plantings of Pitzer to the stucco of Scripps, the east coast feel of Pomona and the 60's/70's architecuture of CMC and HM. I think the varying architecture speaks to the student bodies as well. ... a real gem of a place ...

I am ready to g back to school!?!

MQD - I wish D had applied to Pomona - she wasn't bothered. Why? I believe Pomona is able to offer better financial aid than Pitzer, not to mention it's a more prestigous school. Alas, sometimes what parents want for their child and what they want do not always agree. D seems perfectly happy with her choice of Pitzer and I think it's a good fit for her.
