My D is a drama major at a performing arts high school. She doesn't want to major in drama in college, but wants to participate in theater productions during her college years. She has fallen in love with the Claremont Consortium - was accepted to Scripps, wait listed at Pitzer - but is now worried that there are very few theater opportunities there, and possibly no musical theater. Does anyone have any helpful information?

She should contact Scripps and ask. She’s already been accepted so they are fighting for her to accept, any info they can give you they will. With the five schools there I’d be surprised if there weren’t a fair number of performances. We went to the Pitzer’s admitted students day with my non-theatre daughter and given their presentation (they did a flash mob scene, it was great), I have to believe they have a strong creative theatrical contingency there. Look through all five college websites and call Scripps to ask. The flow between the schools is truly amazing, if it’s right for your daughter it enhances all the schools.

UPDATE: My daughter agonized between Scripps and Brandeis, chose Scripps, and now was accepted to Pitzer off the wait list! Pitzer? Scripps? Thoughts on how to make this decision?

I graduated from Pitzer 20 years ago and while some things have undoubtably changed, others things have not. The “feel” of these two campuses are very different. Pitzer attracts kids who choose a less traditional, more liberal path than those at Scripps. On the other hand, Scripps provides a sense of cohesiveness, empowerment, and security that is typical of many all-women’s LACs. Both have so much to offer and being a student at one does not preclude you from taking advantage of the other. You can take classes, participate in activities, eat in the dining halls of any of the Consortium schools. That said, your D should select the school that is most closely aligned with her personality and ideals. The friends she makes in college will be friends for life!
