Claremont McKenna Chances

I am currently a freshman at Northeastern University in Boston, MA, and will be applying to Claremont McKenna College as a transfer student this spring for Fall 2006 admission. Not a strong high school academic record, but much stronger college one (for the first semester at least…). Any thoughts on my chances of acceptance? Has anybody else applied there that could give me their stats (either accepted of declined)? Thanks.

High School Stats
3.39 GPA, 1260 SAT

College Stats
College GPA (Through first semester) – 3.75

College Extracurriculars
Research assistant for communications professor
Student Senate
College Democrats
Honors Program (Beginning second semester)
Finance and Investment Club

*Confident that I will receive excellent letters of recommendation

I will be taking a challenging course load next semester including calculus for business and economics, financial accounting, honors microeconomics, and honors intro to philosophy.

What do you think? Do I have a chance?

Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Also, other schools that I am looking at are:
Georgetown
Northwestern
Michigan

I would like to major in either political science or economics.

Any thoughts?

Rumor has it that CMC is not accepting any transfers for this year, but that's just what I heard from a girl on my floor who wanted to transfer there. Your high school stats are a tad low, but I dont' know how much that matters for college transfer.

my friend in student government transferred there on a full scholarship. your ec's is good too.and your g.p.a is competitive.dont worry, be happy....haha

I'm pretty sure CMC doesn't offer full scholarships - only full offers of need-based financial aid. And I stand by my original statements about GPA, etc. Your ECs are average but nothing spectacular.

Thanks for the reply. Looking at my ec's, I think the ones that I have are good, but there's probably not enough. Could you think of anything else that I could do that would especially stand out? Also, stickypenguin, you said that you didnt think they were taking transfer students this year - was that for spring admission of fall admission of 2006? Thanks.

They didnt take any spring transfers. I applied and got a letter that said that they encourage me to apply for the fall because they were unable to take any spring transfer students. So unless they were lying to me, they didnt take any spring, but will take fall transfers.
For what its worth, I would try getting more leadership posititons. I dont know if I would have been accepted as a transfer but I was waitlisted as a freshman. My stats were 1340 sat, about a 3.8 or 3.9 uw gpa, and 3 or 4 leadership positions. Anyway, applying doesnt hurt but if you dont get in and you really want to attend CMC, you might want to reapply as a junior with a stong college record and some leadership positions. If you can, try to get a state or maybe national leadership position. I think my position helped me get into some of my transfer schools and my guess is that CMC gives more weight to leadership than most schools.

What kind of leadership positions did you hold that think helped you transfer to some of your other top choices?

Also, although CMC is my top choice, what does everything think about the others schools I am looking at? I know they're all reaches, but are some bigger reaches than others? Which one do you think I have the best change of getting into? Thanks

Michigan. it accepts more transfers. Heyyy....we are taking the same major...

you should have a good shot a michigan. I dont really know about georgetown or northwestern. My guess is that they are as hard as CMC but dont quote me on that.

Do you guys think that I would have a chance of getting into Michigan applying this spring for admission next fall? I know my high school gpa is not great and my chances would go up if I applied during my sophomore year, but will I still have a chance? With the the high cost of Northeastern and it not having a strong program in what I would like to study, it does not make a lot of sense to stay here so I would like to transfer as soon as possible (I came here for another program which Northeastern is very strong in, but have decided that I would rather study econ or poli sci).

I bet you would have a good shot at michigan this fall but think about waiting a little longer. I am not saying you should wait, but it may be worth one more year of basics at northeastern if you really want to go to georgetown, cmc, or northwestern. If you would really rather be at the others, then dont just go to michigan becasue it will take you the soonist. Work really hard and you could get into a great program (not that michigan isnt). Plus, I cant imagine northeastern being more expensive than michigan out of state.
