Clarification of AP credit awarded for AP Calculus AB/BC

Hey all, quick question.

On this chart for AP credit awarded http://www.transfercredit.umd.edu/plc/APGenEd.pdf, it states that with a score of 4 and 5, the Calculus AB exam gives an exemption for MATH140 with 4 credits, The Calculus BC exam gives an exemption for MATH140 and MATH141 with 8 credits, and the Calculus BC w/ AB subscore gives only an exemption to MATH140 with 4 credits.

I may be interpreting this wrong, but it seems as if the Calculus BC w/ AB subscore is basically the same as the Calculus AB Exam. So what I understand is that because I’ve taken the BC w/ AB subscore exam (and received 5 on both BC and AB section, mind you) instead of only the BC exam, I’ll only be awarded 4 credits instead of 8?

Could someone with more information please elaborate if this is indeed true?

This is from the College Board website

“A Calculus AB subscore (1–5) is reported on the Calculus BC exam based on performance on the portion of the exam devoted to Calculus AB topics (approximately 60 percent of the exam). The Calculus AB subscore is designed to give colleges and universities more information about your abilities. Although each college and university sets its own policy for awarding credit and/or placement for AP Exam scores, it is recommended that institutions apply the same policy to the Calculus AB subscore that they apply to the Calculus AB score. Use of the subscore in this manner is consistent with the philosophy of the courses, since common topics are tested at the same conceptual level in both Calculus AB and Calculus BC.”

The 3rd sentence is the one that recommends treating the test results as ONLY being equivalent to a Calc AB test result.

What I see in this sentence is that the college board recommends that the AB subscore (not the test) be treated separately for credit, which makes sense, and the Calculus BC score can be used for BC credit, which makes sense. What UMD seems to say is that regardless of what you got on the Calculus BC with AB subscore exam, we will only count the AB subscore for AB/MATH140 credit.

I think I should rephrase my question and make it shorter and clearer: Has any student been awarded 8 credits for their Calculus BC w/AB subscore assuming they received a combination of 4 & 5s?

I can’t answer that one. My D only took AP Calc AB.

Update: Maryland awards 8 credits for the Calculus BC with AB subscore in my case (two 5s).
