I was going off that 6 were from the Lubbock area, which has been mentioned on past threads, but I haven’t ever confirmed that on the website or from a Clarkie (that I can remember), so it could be wrong.

Last year I think about 240 applied (it has increased by a fair bit each year for the past several years), which is closer to 200, I was just using 300 because that was our established “maximum.”

Hey guys,

There appears to be a lot of speculations. To clear things up a bit, Dr. SanFran told us there are over 300 apps this year. Last year there were 14 scholars chosen but one decided to decline the offer. Also usually there’s only 1 scholar from the local area. Originally when the program started there were quite a few who were locals. However, I know for the past two years, there’s been only one person who was from Lubbock. Good luck everyone! You guys are the best of the best!

Umm stats wise: Taken from the Clarks website “the average SAT score for the 13 participants was greater than 2340 and PSAT was greater than 221”

[TTU Clark Scholars Program](http://www.clarkscholars.ttu.edu/_private/about.htm)

thanks Cake. So it looks like by my calculations we’ll have something between a 4-6% acceptance rate.

when do we hear back from the program…?

Last year the official website said:
“Due to the large volume of applications this year we will be making our decisions the last week of April - 1st week of May 2011”

They ended-up rejecting a lot of applicants on the 22nd (the Friday before the last week of April (which was a full 7-day week btw)). I saw one acceptance on the May 3rd. I might have missed other earlier acceptances. Last year’s thread was huge, and is difficult to read through quickly.

However their application deadline was a month after this year’s. So you could receive notifications about a month earlier but you also have to consider that they’ve had a 25% increase in applicants.

All that just to say we have too many variables to guess when they’ll start sending out acceptances/rejections. So it’s best just to stick with the confirmation e-mail which said we’ll all find out “hopefully by mid-April.”

Sorry to ask again but has anybody heard anything recently about decisions? I just got accepted to another camp and they requested a reply by next Tuesday. Should I just send an email to Clark and ask about decisions? I’m not sure what to do…

Does anyone know how good the research is at Clarks, disregarding the “prestige” of the program?

I was accepted into Simons at SBU, and have already committed. I obviously won’t retract my Simons spot in the very low chance I get into Clarks, but I was just wondering if I made the right choice assuming I got in.

^If you already have committed into Simons, then you should withdraw your application from Clarks. It’s just proper form.

It makes it more fair for the rest of us, since we won’t be possibly losing a spot to someone who doesn’t even plan on going.

Oh really, that’s proper practice o.o? Thanks for letting me know :P! I figured I wouldn’t be able to get in, and that if I did, I would reject anyways so somehow else could have it.

But thanks, haha.

I think its nice for the admissions people, especially if your a very strong applicant, because they’d have one less applicant to have to compare to others.

But unless you plan on accepting and backing out at the last minute, you wouldn’t be costing anyone else a spot. I’m sure Clark invites kids every year who end up going to RSI or another program, and have people wait-listed for that reason.

@speedcuber I think several people had that problem last year. You could either ask for an extension/ more time to decide for the camp or you could contact Ms. Durham and politely ask, I guess. There’s really no seamless solution.

@The quality of research for the most part, will be top-notch. I had a wonderful mentor and learn a LOT. However, it depends on how much experience you come with as well. The professors are overall very helpful and awesome (he took his lab out on a summer picnic) and willing to adapt to your level of knowledge on the subject of research. However, Clarks may not be as geared toward churning out an Intel/ Siemens competition styled paper as Simons solely emphasizes. For example, a fellow Clarkie last year worked on building a heart valve simulator instead of say producing the typical paper/data stuff. If you are interested in doing those competitions, it would be a good idea to hit the ground running, let your mentor know early, and work toward it from the start.

Would it be too late to send in updates?

If not, should I only send in math/science stuff or can I also send other stuff(i.e. selected to all-national band)?

Would usabo semifinalist and 2nd place at regional science bowl be important enough to send or no?

^
Yes it is unfortunately too late. I tried myself, but got a response saying that they no longer were accepting updates.

i updated them about isef , deca internationals , and marks and they didn’t let me

i messed up

If I remember correctly, I think last year they also stopped accepting updates because of the large number of people sending them or something. Don’t worry guys, it shouldn’t be a huge deal if you didn’t get a chance to send yours in. I didn’t send them any last year and still got in so don’t fret! :)

Nah, 2nd place sucks.

Good luck everybody Hopefully results won’t be too far out! Did anyone else apply to any other programs?

Thanks iluvcake! I’ve been super-busy lately so I haven’t had time to check this thread, so thanks for helping answer everyone’s questions!

I agree with iluvcake in the sense that Clarks is much more about experiencing research as opposed to churning out competition winners. That isn’t to say, of course, that Clark projects don’t go on to win science fair competitions, but the true value of the program lies in the peers that you meet and the experienced gained from working in a professional lab with individualized attention (at least I received a lot of attention from my PI; if you’re assigned to a bad professor, you can ask to change).

One last word: I actually received my call from Clark at the end of April/beginning of May. Dr. SanFran went to voicemail one night, and the next day he called my counselor to get a hold of me and notify me of my acceptance The timing could certainly be different this year since they moved up the application deadline, but that’s the general time frame that we found out. Good luck everyone! Don’t stress too much about it; it’ll all work out in the end. :)
