Clark Scholars 2016

I’m interested in applying to the Clark Scholars program for Summer 2016, and I was curious about what the application consists of. In addition to essays, test scores, and our school transcripts, do any of you former Clark Scholars know whether the program asks for applicants to list their extracurricular activities and teacher recommendations onto the application as well?

Don’t know about Ckark specifically but I don’t know of any other top summer research program that doesn’t so it’s safe to assume the answer is yes.

Here’s last years CC thread.

According to post #6 by a past participant, “The application process is pretty holistic and they look at all aspects: Scores, Transcript, EC, Essay, and Recommendations.” That would seem to cover your questions.

@renaissancedad Awesome, thank you!

I have another question regarding the Clark application so I’ll just ask it here.

Does the teacher recommendation have specific questions or does it just ask for a letter (i.e. something that could be used in other program applications like HSHSP)?

Bump

For submitting our application/test scores/transcript and our teachers/mentors submitting recommendation letters, the only ones I see that requires sending physical mail for are the test scores and transcript. No mail address was specified for submitting the application or recommendation forms. The application and recommendation form say to submit them by email at the bottom. Do the teachers email the forms to the specified address and the students email their application to the specific address, and we physically mail in our transcripts/test scores?

Another thing- I’m using preview on a mac to write this, and I can’t change the size of the text in the personal narrative section, so I can only fit around 350 words in it, and if I exceed that, then a new page is not created and it is just blocked off by what appears to be a footer (and is therefore invisible). Is this bad? Is this on purpose? Is this just due to the editing software I am using? I’m super nervous…

@thecuriousguy I think we just have to mail our transcript/scores and email our application. As for the recommendations, our teachers need to email those ones.

Just download Microsoft word or use google docs, that’ll save you a lot of trouble.

also, I’m turning 17 a few weeks into the program, and i won’t be 17 at the start of the program. Do you think I can still apply?

Hey everyone, I’m also applying to the program and I just looked over the application; are you guys going to describe/elaborate on your school and community activities? It just says to list, but I feel like it would be better for the applicants if we could at least give some sort of description for the nonconventional ones. Also, would previous summer programs go under there?

@mochilate1897 I would try to email them to be sure! There might be some unavoidable issues if you aren’t 17 by the start program having to due with lab work, etc. so it’s best to double check with the program rather than waste your time on the application.

@samsunguser that’s what i was thinking, but i think it’ll be easier for them to say no by responding to a 2 minute email, rather than saying no after reading an excellent, alluring application. They should be able to bend the rules and be lenient after reading a nice application, not a short email. Plus, I’m not looking to do any lab work with Clark

Can we put decile where it says to put class rank in the application? It says to put your rank and size but there’s not enough space to put “top 10% out of 700” or whatever. (It’s not that my school doesn’t tell class rank, it’s just that my rank is horrible due to a bad weighting system and tons of cutthroat classmates who care about nothing other than AP classes.)

For Activities, are we just listing them? Do they not need a description or anything? Also, is there any place to put awards and honors?

I think it’s just listing. The form doesn’t require descriptions.

Any international applicant over here? Also, where do we list the awards/honors?

@mochilate1897 This might be a stupid question, but please answer it if you can: How exactly do I use google docs for writing the essay which exceeds 350 words? The app is in a pdf form, so I can’t make any changes to that after using preview, which results in the essays being blocked off by the page

@PureMathIsFun Try writing your complete essay, then export the PDF to a word doc where you can adjust the font.

Hi! I’m applying to the program too, and I’m an international student.
