Class 2016 Housing??

So I was still waiting to hear about housing and finally called the housing office ... turns out they apparently sent out emails a few days ago and I didn't get one. The * on the phone told me that she couldn't really help or answer any questions. She suggested that I email the housinghelp folks.

I'm still waiting on their response as to what is going on.

I didn't hear about the "meet Emory" sessions until I read a thread here.

Can anyone out there tell me what is up with the housing application? What did the email say?

I don’t know anything about the email since I am a parent of a future Emory student (and he never mentioned any new Emory emails) but you should go online here and register for housing now:

https://myhousing.emory.edu/security/login_student_local.cfm</a></p>

My son did this a few days ago. He had to fill out some questionaire and choose a meal plan too. I am under the impression that he can change his questionaire answers if he wants to until a certain date (May 1?). He used to have two things in the To Do list on his OPUS student center and now he only has one (the final transcript). Hope this helps.

Yes, this helps. Emory indicated they had sent out an email…how did your son know about it?

Anyway thanks for the info!

My son just forwarded me an email that he had gotten from Emory a few weeks ago. He was accepted ED. The email said “The housing application for incoming first-year students will be available once regular Admission decisions are announced – no later than April 2, 2012. The deadline to complete your housing application on-line is May 31, 2012.”

He told me that based on this, he went online and checked the housing website link on his OPUS page and was able to log in and complete the application.

OK, I’ve talked to both Housing and Admissions. They really are giving out conflicting information. Here is a copy of the letter that Housing FORWARDED to me after I requested it. Did everyone else get this?

Dear Incoming Emory First-Year Student –

We are thrilled to welcome you to Emory University and provide you with some initial information regarding on-campus housing.(Please feel free to forward this email to your parents and family members who may be interested).

The majority of all housing information is communicated either through email or on the housing website. Please take the time to review the housing information on the general website [Emory : Residence Life & Housing](<a href=“Residence Life and Housing Operations | Emory University | Atlanta GA”>Residence Life and Housing Operations | Emory University | Atlanta GA) well as the housing website with information specifically for first year students- [Undergraduate Housing :: Info for Incoming First-Year Students](<a href=“Residence Life and Housing Operations | Emory University | Atlanta GA”>Residence Life and Housing Operations | Emory University | Atlanta GA)

Housinghelp@learnlink.emory.eduis the email that the Office of Residence Life and Housing uses to notify you of important housing information. Please make sure to read all emails sent from this address. Some information comes out in bulk and may be sent to your SPAM folder or equivalent. Please double check before you delete the emails. It is also the email address where you can send all of your housing inquiries. Please share this information with your parents as well, so that they are kept in the information loop.

APPLYING FOR HOUSING – May 31, 2012 deadline
The application for incoming first-year students is available on-line at https://myhousing.emory.edu.
All applications completed by the deadline will be given the same consideration for assignment.

When you go to https://myhousing.emory.edu, when presented with a log-on screen, please use your Emory Assigned Network ID and password to log-on. Click the on “Apply Online” button to access the application. Please note that you can log back into your application by selecting “MyHousing” instead of “Apply Online” and make changes up until May 31st.

The on-line housing application is where you can request to be considered for housing in one of the First Year Living Learning Communities (Citizenship, Creativity and Innovation, Leadership, Living Green, and Global Cultures). There are three questions on the Personal Preferences Page where you preference and rank the Living Learning Programs of your choice. You may not request a specific building on the application, but you may preference a Living Learning Program. Assignments to the Living Learning Programs are made randomly from those who have indicated this preference.

ROOMMATES
You have until May 31st to request a roommate on your MyHousing Page. You do not have to request a roommate - about 60% of students do not. If you have not selected anyone and are assigned to a double occupancy room, someone will be assigned with you.

We are offering Room Sync, a Facebook application to assist incoming students with finding a roommate. This application is only as good as the number of students who decide to try it. If you would like to use this application to either search for a roommate or just meet other incoming students, please click the link below to add the app via your Facebook page:

OK, I didn’t get this email either. I did go online and complete my housing application but it was just an accident that I discovered that it was finally available. I haven’t received any emails. (and yes, I’ve checked my spam box) So I called Emory, they’ve double checked and confirmed my email and can’t explain why I’m not getting the information. Really, REALLY frustrating.

I want to live in a LLC, but there was nothing about an essay when I checked that box. Does anyone know what is going on?

LKathryn - My son (as far as I know) didn’t get that email either! I am so glad that Gannon posted it. I printed it and will show it to him later.

I do know the answer to your question though. My son was also wondering about the extra application or essay for the LLC’s. I emailed the housing office asking if he had missed something on the housing application and got a response back saying that they were happy he was interested in a LLC and that;

“He is all set if he indicated this interest on his Housing Application. We used to have a secondary application for our LLCs, but we changed the process this year.”

It is sounding like getting into one of the LLC’s is going to be a random lottery. :/

"

To highlight Gannon’s Housing email on LLC’s:

Does this mean there are no essays associated with housing?

My son got a housing information email last night. It said basically what the letter above did but was in Q and A format.

my son has not received any emails about housing at all. There is a housing application on his opus account, but that is it. He was accepted ED 1.

Flowerpower - your son will get the email after he submits his completed housing application. The first line of my sons email was acknowledging the receipt of his completed housing application.

thanks for letting me know!

Can anyone tell me where the new dorm (Hamilton Holmes) is located on campus? I couldn’t find it on the interactive map. Also, does anyone know which dorms are mixed gender each floor, or same gender per floor? My son is hoping for one or two specific dorms, and he wants to answer his questions to try and get a particular dorm. And do they change those things from year to year? Thanks!

In front of Longstreet means

Does anyone know if Hamilton Holmes will have mixed or grouped coed floors (or both)? Does it resemble Longstreet Means in room sizes and layout…and maybe suites? There is very little posted about this dorm.

All the new Freshmen dorms are located in the same area. The older ones are scattered around campus a little, but none of them are remote.

Are most dorms carpeted?

Yes, at least all of the ones i’ve been in.

Wow, I used to gripe about how they should drop the essay, and it finally happened. I guess they finally realized that it is absolutely useless in determining who actually is interested in the initiative that the dorm pushes or sponsors. Most tudents will simply make something up to get nice housing and avoid the older dorms. Thank you, Emoryhousing, for wising up! If they actually wanted to be selective or sort, they should perhaps look at admissions essays or ask for a resume to see what students are interested in and then sort that way, but I doubt that the interest of most students will fit the theme of the new dorms. For example, maybe Turman and LSM could could be filled with students who are interested in “citizenship” or diversity (maybe politically interested or interested in service, or diversity initiatives. One can imagine that internationals may want a place like global cultures) easily, but finding Emory students who are legit interested in sustainability (as incoming freshmen, I am referring to Fevans of course) and arts and innovation(Hamilton Holmes), is woefully unlikely. Themed halls can sometimes be a waste. The only thing cool about Turman is that they can elect and are encouraged to take the same suite of freshman seminars associated with issues of citizenship. Perhaps more sustainability or more international/global issues or diversity related seminars could be implemented to further engage students at Fevans and LSM beyond, “we through a few events emphasizing diversity and recycle and turn off our lights.” Hamilton Holmes is an opportunity as well to come up with more arts, creativity, innovation type courses or venues (for example, perhaps musically talented H-H students can put on a musical performance in the LSM/HH courtyard. Or maybe, the dorm can sponsor its own robotics club with the help of the physics department. They can also have a “big draw or paint or photography” event by which those, who want, can submit works of visual arts and they can be displayed in HH Hallways or lounges, similar to the student work gallery in Cox Computing). There are so many more things they can do to make these dorms more “Living Learning” like by encouraging the students to engage the dorm’s theme in and out of class or the reshall itself. Furthermore, time to unite freshman through something more interesting than songfest. I would be down for each hall having flags and maybe having formal athletic tournaments outside of club sports or intramural (as in, it should be a year or semester long thing, where progress is kept of each frosh dorm in a sport and then some are rewarded if they win. I’m thinking, a trophy).

Anyone get their housing or roommate assignment yet?
