Class Entering in 2015 Acceptances and Final Decisions

Just called Mannes today, and to anyone who is very confused about why it is April 2nd and there is still no “acceptance” or “decline” on your page, you have been wait listed. I asked when they would notify me about my status again, and they say that by May 1st they tell you if you’ve been accepted or not… And financial aid can come later…

That’s really weird though, since you have to send an acceptance to schools before May 1st, with a deposit (correct me if I’m mistaken). So…how do they expect a waitlisted person to accept their acceptance if it’s past the deadline?
I have no idea. :expressionless:

Even though I posted earlier that D was accepted to FSU for VP, I just wanted to let people know that the official letter didn’t arrive until today. This is just FYI for others checking back over this thread for timing, etc.

That is confusing OperaAdri. You’d think it would be helpful to know you are waitlisted.

I believe schools are aware that you may get off a waitlist and that there are certain things you have to do to make it work. I find that confusing as well but maybe others can explain it better.

My daughter was accepted off a wait list for undergrad in mid-may. I know others who came off in April, May and June! At that time they will work with you on an appropriate time frame to respond. Yes, no or give me a day to two or more to consider it. The bummer could be you already have accepted and paid a deposit at another school. You will lose that money if you accept at the new school. Still spending a lot of money seems part of the process. My D declined the offer immediately. She was set and had forgotten about the wait list. A friend’s daughter accepted it and lost the deposit on the other school. Still it was her D’s first choice. Others may have different experiences.

@OperaAdri‌ My son was accepted off of the waitlist to his first choice school on 4/29 last year. This was our first experience having a music major so we kind of just assumed a ‘waitlist’ was the same as a rejection and moved forward with the second choice school. We had signed up for summer orientation, secured housing, etc.

Then the studio director from his dream school called him that morning, they got him the financial offer within 2 or 3 hours and then it was rush, rush, rush to make a decision before that 5/1 deadline. I think the offering school gave him more time to decide (a week or so?) but we had deposits at school number 2 that we didn’t want to lose.

It is odd, though, that they didn’t formally notify those who’ve been waitlisted.

Speaking of disappointing offers. My son just got an official scholarship letter from the local lac…so absolutely terribly low.lol. um. He got more from much better music schools. This is a school short on cellists. Like down to 1 and he was offered only 3,000 for talent. I feel bad for his cello teacher who teaches there. I can’t imagine what cellist will end up there with that kind of offer.

Well as to the discussion above… Most of us are not mind readers! Acceptances, rejections, scholarships, no scholarships etc. Everyone is just trying to make sense of this crazy process. Not a one of us really knows the why of it in my opinion.
I have been really thrilled to take part in this forum and am so excited for all of your kids or for you, if you are a student. Congratulations! I’m looking forward to seeing where everyone lands.

@cellomom6‌ you should definitely ask for an appeal. That’s way too low, especially if they’re low on cellists… Demand an appeal, that’s the way I’d go.

He’s not doing an appeal. I can’t tell if you are joking operadri.lol he wasn’t taking it serious but it just shows that scholarships are not always tied to ability. They’re just not that interested in having performance minded students. Although you’d think one cellist wouldn’t be enough for an orchestra.

What the heck? That is SO rude to not tell you that you’re on the waitlist. I’m actually shocked right now. I would say, thanks, but um, no thanks for NOT telling me … As if you weren’t gonna ask…?? We are all clearly valued more at some places!

I’m wondering if it was a clerical error not notifying students they are on the waitlist. Otherwise, it just doesn’t make sense

I’ll bet it was…I wouldn’t be surprised after what I went through with my prescreening.

It sounds pretty disorganized. But try not to judge a program by the faults of their admissions department. You’ll never really deal with admissions again once you matriculate.

Which admissions department are you guys talking about… Still talking about Mannes??? Sorry I got lost.

@cellomom6‌ I don’t joke about that stuff, I was quite serious to be honest… I suppose some places don’t do appeals apparently :frowning: oh well, can’t have them all. Either way, there’s always other schools and nobody needs to waste their time with those schools that don’t care (much) about their students!!

Mannes. I think. About their non notification of being on the waitlist. That maybe it was a clerical error.

@operaAdri Are you considering other schools? I would think you would go to Juilliard! Such an accomplishment!!

@cellomom6‌ oh, yeah no it wasn’t a clerical error. I called with my mom and my mom talked to them about how it was really, just common courtesy (not those exact words, but basically) to inform when someone has been waitlisted. They replied with that it’s just how their system works…so I guess that’s that!

@oscar63‌ now that I’ve been accepted/declined/waitlisted to all the schools I applied to/got called back to, I have to think of the expenses rationally. At the moment, I have a full ride to UM, which is a half hour drive from my house. That means I wouldn’t have to pay a cent for four years, and I have an amazing voice teacher here in Miami whom I would hate to leave, especially since he is the one who has molded me, and who has helped me and many others reach their goals.
It is a tough decision, but if I went to Juilliard, even with a full scholarship, I would have to put in many expenses. Expenses that my parents and I have come to estimate is in the least $15,000 with the most being around $25,000. Of course, this would include somewhere to live, food to eat, and transportation to, well, everywhere. I mean it’s New York City, you can’t exactly get a car, it’s kind of pointless.
Also, we have come to the conclusion that hopefully, if they want me now, they’ll want me later as well. I’m only 15, in case I hadn’t mentioned that before, and NYC is a big city…way bigger than Miami.
There are plenty more factors that come into play, but those are the basics for me, at least. An alternative is my family move with me so that they wouldn’t be afraid of sending me off into NYC at 15…but that would be an even higher cost…

Anyways, in the end, my financial situation is extremely poor, and my family struggles to pay for my voice lessons, not to mention now the possibility of $25,000 in NYC? I’m not cruel. That wouldn’t be very fair on my parents (although, yes, they said they’d find a way, but no, I wouldn’t let them).

So I think once all those factors come into play, it is a very hard choice, but it’s one that must be made. Either way, I believe wherever I end up is where I was meant to be, and it will all work out in the longrun, even if it’s not what I initially hoped for.

OperaAdri I am impressed. You seem to have the maturity of someone much older.

@cellomom6‌ thank you, I get that a lot. I suppose my maturity is how I’ve finished high school early…? Or maybe it’s just that I’ve been homeschooled. Whatever it may be, hopefully this maturity will assist me in my future career as an opera singer!

@operaAdri You have great options and a very supportive family- you will do very well. Best of luck to you
