@oscar63 thank you! Same to you
I too still haven’t heard anything from Mannes and sent them an email yesterday inquiring whether there was an update I might have missed. No response. If it is true that those who have not heard anything are wait-listed, then I find their lack of communication to be rather unprofessional. My D was wait-listed at SFCM and NEC and they both sent a courteous email stating this and gave info about being on their wait-list. NEC even had a separate form to fill out asking how long you are willing to stay on the wait list and they gave dates to choose from. A lot more organized. I know it’s just their admin, but it makes you wonder how well they will handle other issues there. When my D went to Mannes for her audition, we opted to take the tour of their new Greenwich Village campus and when we got there the staff running the front desk were confused as to why we were there and we had to show them the tour schedule we received. I know they are in the process of moving to the Village (perhaps busy with their move), but their lack of contact regarding their wait-list and their lack of knowledge in person really makes one question whether they would want to go to a school with leadership such as this. Just sayin’.
ProudFluteMom,
I can attest that NEC administration is quite good. My husband jokes that between all our kids we have dealt with the financial aid offices of 6 colleges and NECs was by far the best and most helpful.
Our experience of Mannes: disarray, confusion, lack of communication between departments, wrong information. Sending emails, no replies. This is a very time-sensitive month for everyone. Every other school we have been involved with acts like they understand that. The administrative structure of a school gives you a flavor of the place. No notifications for being waitlisted? Really? That’s unacceptable. If we were in that situation, I would be contacting the higher-ups there.
It might be true that once you are matriculated you don’t have to deal with admissions, but you still need Financial Aid and the Dean’s office to be working properly. Can only imagine how the move downtown will complicate Mannes matters, at every level.
Just to add to the Mannes discussion, I have changed my email SIX times with them. This is not an exaggeration. They had emailname at yahoo dot com, when it was supposed to be emailname at outlook dot com. I literally called and emailed a total of 6 different times and was assured it was fixed. I didnt believe them after the fourth time, so I LITERALLY CREATED the emailname at yahoo dot come account. Not even kidding. Luckily it wasnt taken yet. And guess what? The decision email still came to the “wrong” yahoo one that I specifically created for Mannes. Bahahahaha.
@ProudFluteMom , I believe we were in the same session with you at Mannes. I had the same experience with wanting to do that “tour” of the new facility downtown. (It was actually a video presentation, since the actual building is a construction zone). The invite stated the corner of 5th Ave and 13th street, but of course there are 4 corners and I really didn’t know which one to go to (it’s the SW corner for anyone else who makes the trip). Then the security guard at the door didn’t know where to direct us, even though the conference room was only about 40 feet away. We wound up being about 10 minutes late, even though we got to the corner 15 minutes before the presentation was set to start.
I have to say I’m excited for the future of Mannes. The new facility is fantastic, the environment downtown is dynamic, their dorms are great and I think it will be far more practical for the future students who won’t have to ride the subway back and forth to W 85th Street. The possibilities for collaboration with their Jazz school and the Parsons students for set design and costuming should allow for lots of cool, new things. But at the moment a lot is still shaking out and it may be a year or two before the dust settles.
Overall, over the past 2 years, we’ve found the admissions people at Mannes helpful. We’ve visited a few times and they helped to arrange some classes for my D to sit in on. I will note that arranging a trial lesson there can be difficult, since many of the faculty are adjuncts and working professionals. If you live in the NY area and have flexibility in your schedule, it can be done. But I was typically hitch-hiking a visit for my daughter onto a business trip that paid my way to NY and covered the hotel cost, and we were trying to see Mannes, Julliard, MSM and then catch the Cornell campus-to-campus bus from their Med school to go see Ithaca College the next day, then on to Eastman after that. Fitting Mannes appointments into a whirlwind tour can be tough. But I share your experience that audition week was a bit chaotic. The comments people are making on the wait list are kind of strange. I can’t imagine that they’ve really thought through the impact this has on people trying to understand their status and make a decision.
I agree Mannes has the potential to be amazing, especially after they sort through the move and start really combining resources and projects with Parsons. My mom provides recommendations for her students to go to Parsons often, and she says its a really hot school for visual, and that she didnt even know they were both The New School until recently! I hope these changes provides a fresh and rising reputation for Mannes. (ps, we should have all put this under Tell us about your audition, but Im not really worried about it, just wanted to keep the thread going in the same place)
@paintbrush22 it is an amazing school, I’m not going to lie there. Maybe not even school, but I know the training there is (or at least was) impeccable. For example, I know that many students from Mannes are the ones being accepted into the Miami Summer Music Festival, over people from other conservatories, based on their voice and acting ability. This is just for opera, but, it is indeed amazing training. My voice teacher (who is one of the teachers at this festival) said that they were the top of any other college. So they have potential…but they’re already quite great. Disorganized, I’ll give you that, but good training.
@FriscoFred @ProudFluteMom I think I was also in your group. I was the first one to arrive, and they said that the information they had given beforehand was incorrect, which is why we weren’t able to find it. This is why people at the desk were confused. Also, proudflutemom, you’re probably on the waitlist, so I would call them about that, since they usually take awhile to answer emails.
D finally received an email from Mannes today and yes, she is on the wait-list. Glad her status there is finally confirmed. Yeah, @FriscoFred, we did the crazy audition trips too…D auditioned at Eastman, CMU and CIM back-to-back in 3 days. Flew to Rochester, then a Greyhound trip to Pittsburgh and CIM, then flew back to Florida. It was definitely a whirlwind weekend trip… not to mention frigid temps below zero and heavy snow. Our trip to NEC was thwarted by a blizzard that canceled our flight, so unable to make the one day only live auditions for flute… so they would only accept a recorded audition after that. We are left to wonder whether she would have advanced beyond the wait-list there if she was able to make it to the live audition. We are leaning toward CIM now, although D really loved her visit to MSM, unfortunately MSM’s scholarship offer was half as much as CIM.
Also have to mention that the day we left NYC from D’s MSM & Mannes auditions, we were at LaGuardia airport when the plane skidded off the runway! The airport closed down and we had to be bussed to JFK later that evening since our plane was diverted there. So glad auditions are over!!!
First time poster here, but I’ve been seeing everyone’s great news and so happy to see everyone has survived audition season! Now for the decisions! Here are mine, in the order I heard back:

Also, I was waitlisted at UT Austin but have asked to be removed since I have accepted Peabody (with a full scholarship, ahh!)
@ProudFluteMom I think I met you and your daughter, from what I am reading in your posts. I played right before her in the masterclass at FFA Convention in January We talked after the class! So happy for her – congratulations!
@ProudFluteMom , I will never complain about travel again after reading about your ordeals! So glad that we had no real mishap during audition season. Scooted around a blizzard on the Mannes trip, drove through some lake effect squalls between Oberlin and SUNY-Fredonia, and flew up to Chicago on the coldest day of the year for CCPA (they closed the schools due to how cold it was). I also had the pleasure of spending my 50th birthday with my daughter on the eve of an audition.
You know, I think there is a business opportunity for a specialized online community for parents and prospective music students. There is so little good information out there that is systematically presented, particularly when you are in the early high school phase and determine that this music thing isn’t a passing fad! Trying to figure out how to get the best opportunities and prepare properly to get into a good conservatory is really hard when this isn’t in your family’s DNA. Not to mention how to determine the best fit between your student and the various programs, and how people succeed in music school. Has anybody seen anything along those lines out there? Maybe message me directly so as not to distract this thread.
@glassharmonica I stated that Berklee was generous because when my son attended their 5-Week Summer Program last year at the final performance they gave out over 50 scholarships to various attendees, ranging from $8,000 to full rides. It was a mind-blowing experience. My son and many of the friends he made that summer did not get a scholarship at that time, many however did last week. My son estimates that he knows of approximately 65 students who received Berklee scholarships to attend Fall 2015. My son is not a “super star” high school musician, he never made a state honors band, or either of the 2 elite high school big bands in our locale (which are very competitive). He did improve significantly in the last year though after attending the Berklee summer program. I did not mean to hurt anyone’s feelings, rather I want to give hope to parents and students. In addition, my son and many of the other Berklee summer students got accepted to The New School and very few received a scholarship, those that did received significantly less than they did at Berklee, which is another reason why I stand by my statement and feel that Berklee is generous. I might also add that we are not eligible for need-based aid.
@FluteGuy6491 Yes, I remember you That was a great morning! You all played beautifully and what a thrill it was for her to play for Aaron Goldman! And a BIG CONGRATULATIONS on your acceptance to Peabody with a full scholarship! @FriscoFred you might want to message Mezzo’sMama about potential business opportunities for online music communities for prospective music students – she seems very knowledgeable on this topic.

Whil we haven’t strayed too far from the topic of Mannes, I had the most wonderful experience there when I arrived. Everyone helping run the auditions was incredibly friendly and hospitable, and the panel of people who judged were incredibly vocal and made me feel as though I were just singing for faculty I had known for years. I was apologized to when I was there because something had been wrong with the email system–anything with an @mannes email address was not receiving emails, essentially. I was unable to secure a trial lesson for this reason and they felt very bad about it–that was also a huge reason I didn’t accept the admission status there (awesome, i’l just gamble $60,000 for a teacher I’m not sure if I like!!) But that’s not really my loss.
The admissions office took a while as members of it, beside having technology problems, were traveling around Asia for recruiting purposes. I also agree that once those issues are sorted out that the school has some serious potential, and I hope it works out all those kinks soon! There are some wonderful teachers on that faculty as well, so I think (if the scholarship package is good) it’s definitely a good choice.
@singerintheworks yes, exactly. They’re not exactly very open to people taking trial lessons, and the ones that are charge upwards of $100…that’s a lot in my opinion for a prospective student.
The program is great, but they don’t tend to give much aid even to those who need it. I got into a small school (nothing popular) and they were expecting my family to pay an amount that we don’t even make (???) per year. Like, haha, that’s funny. Anyways that’s off topic…
Altogether what I’m trying to say is, if they wanted you to invest $60,000 and didn’t even give you a trial lesson, I’d say it’s not worth it
I agree, not getting a sample lesson especially after traveling, spending money on the hotel and missing school doesnt make it very exciting to go to the school. You would think the teachers would want to know if they can work with you.
Are we still supposed to post final decision on here or PM them?
