Class Expansion Next Year?

Is Stanford going to admit more people next year? I thought I heard they would be building new dorms so they can expand their class. That would be awesome!

If they're building new dorms (for undergrads), this is the first I've heard of it. I know they've talked about consolidating freshman housing, but I'm not sure how many spots that would open up for new admitees, if any.

Is it confirmed that it applies for next year?

Not that I know of. I imagine they won't have made any final decisions on that until Spring Quarter (April-Mayish), because that's when the Draw happens and people start figuring things out for the next year.

Even if that does happen though, it's unlikely that it will open up more spots for incoming freshman. If anything it will reduce the number of beds available, although that's not likely to affect the size of an incoming class adversely.

The prospect of admitting more students has been raised, but the university is quite far from making a decision on it. It's actually somewhat controversial on campus--my feeling is that a lot of people worry about the impact on the campus environment that several hundred extra undergrads could cause, but no one wants to seem elitist by opposing the plan outright.

There are in fact plans to open new dorms in the near future. A new graduate dorm was just (or will soon be) completed, and when that happens, an old grad dorm (Crothers) will be renovated and opened to undergrads. However, as I understand it, the extra space will be used to "unstuff" existing space rather than create extra space for new undergrads. For example, rooms that were intended to be singles when built will go back to being singles, instead of the infamously tiny doubles that they are now.

Thanks Sly Si,
very informed you are.

Yeah Sly Si, I saw an article about that in the alumni magazine.

The current economic climate makes it highly unlikely that an expansion will happen in the near future. When (and if) the economy improves, the demographical situation will be such that an expansion may be less desirable than it is now. And "support" for it is mixed as it is.

My daughter is in Donner in Stern Hall. There are a bunch of new buildings nearing completion across the street from Stern. They certainly look like a dorms-to-be. Does anybody else know what they are?

Check out the Stanford Daily online. THere have been articles in the past on the consideration of class expansion, but it appears this decision has not been made and will not apply for the class of 2013 admits. Also, if you read about the SCEA low number of admits for 2013 class, it further suggests that there will be no expansion of the freshman class as of now.

I agree with nyccard: I don't know anything about how the tanking economy is affecting thoughts of expansion, but I do know the university's finances are having serious problems right now. Budgets are being cut all over the place. In that climate, I would be surprised if they can find the money to build the new dorms and provide the additional financial aid that expansion would require.

usermom: That's Munger, the new graduate student dorm. It was supposed to be finished by now, but I haven't actually seen it since coming back from winter break.
