Class of '11 Theatre Decisions Thread

Hi everyone -

I know we're still at the beginning of getting answers, but there are a few ED and early notice people who have decided where they are going.

It's up to you how you post, but I think it's very helpful to the kids coming up if you state whichever of the following is relevant to you:

Applied to:
Accepted to:
Rejected from:
Waitlisted at:
Final Decision:

Then you can add a few sentences about how you (or your kid) came to a decision. I know we followed these kinds of threads very closely when my D was making her list, and now the Class of '11 can make the same kind of contribution for the years ahead.

I can't post yet, but maybe someone who is ready can start us off. There doesn't have to be any cumulative list for the posts, just your own status.

Thank you!

MomCares’ D

Applied to:
…Northwestern, Yale, Brown,
…University of Michigan, CCM, CMU, NYU,
…Penn State, Syracuse, Evansville,
…U of Oklahoma, Emerson, Webster
Pulled Applications:
…In Dec, pulled all applications after ED to NU
Accepted to:
…Northwestern (ED), Evansville (BFA Perf),
…Santa Fe (BFA MT)
Rejected from: None
Waitlisted at: None
Final Decision: Northwestern University (BA/BS dual major w/ MT Certificate hopefully)

Thought process: After falling in love with UMich last summer, and getting several early BFA offers after the summer Thespian Festival, D gave serious thought to what she wanted from her college years. She decided she wanted a traditional college experience, including a “real” campus, challenging academics, world-class a cappella groups, the opportunity to double major, PLUS a BFA-style theatre and MT program. She found the best fit for her at Northwestern, followed by Yale and Brown.

Thanks, MomCares! I was thinking you’d start us off. I’m so happy for your daughter, and for you!

Thanks! It has felt very odd to sit out this audition season, though, since we are all used to being in the thick of it. As you can tell we’ve been living vicariously through everyone, and I’m so excited to hear where everyone lands!!

Bump… in the hopes there are more “Deciders” out there soon! ;-D

Applied: U Minn Guthrie BFA (Perf), Evansville, UNCSA, Columbus State, Piedmont College

Accepted: CSU, Piedmont

Rejected: UM Guthrie

Waitlisted: Evansville (#1 on list)

No decision: UNCSA

You mean it was your instant choice? We’d all like to hear why it was so perfect for you. This thread is really helpful for next year’s kids as they decide where to apply and then where to go. Go ahead and tell us your story, if you don’t mind.

Alright. Well I started out with UM Guthrie as my first choice, then NCSA followed by the local schools CSU and Piedmont. I loved the Guthrie bc the people there were extremely nice and they had recently picked up a new Stanislavsky coach. I believe thats who it was. Anyway, I auditioned and didn’t even make the call back. A month later I was at my state high school theatre conference and Evansville was there. I knew about the school bc we have an alumni of our HS theatre dept. there right now. I had never thought of auditioning for them though. They called me back though and I became really excited and was eventually thrown on a waitlist for their school. NCSA was the next week, I went and had mixed feelings. I wasn’t crazy about the staff picking the parts for the shows without auditions, and that students wouldn’t see a public audience until late junior year. But the staff was amazing, and Bill Poole is amazing, we are still currently in touch about my status at the school. I decided I’d give Evansville a go and started getting to know them and their staff. I have fallen in love with the school. They have treated me the best out of everyone. Also most people dont think of Evansvile as a big BFA school but they are constantly putting people to work on and off broadway. I found out today that my butt kissing and follow ups has paid off and I was moved to the top of the wait-list.

If there’s anything I missed or any questions I can try and answer them for you.

Thank you! That is a fascinating story. #1 on the waitlist sounds like a pretty solid shot (especially since in the posts above you there is already one student who is turning them down!). Update your decision when you hear from them, OK?

I think for waitlisted people putting your April decision is fine - waitlist changes might not happen until mid-summer, and we do want to hear. Besides, until you get in on a waitlist, you DO have to have a decision. So go for it!

Good luck everyone!

Just bumping … REALLY looking forward to this part, ready to be done with the waiting for answers part!

Applied to: Rutgers, SUNY Purchase, UNCSA
Accepted to: Rutgers
Rejected from: ??? Got tired of waiting on UNCSA.
Waitlisted at: SUNY Purchase
Final Decision: Rutgers

I did a ton of research last summer and came to realize that there were only three BFA schools that a) excited me, b) I thought I had a chance at, and c) wouldn’t bankrupt my grandparents. All three are ridiculously selective “tippy top” programs so this goes against the grain of the advice that is given here to have a list of reaches, matches and safeties. But, I would have been okay with going to community college for a year and trying again with a longer list next year if things did not work out. Why spend money and pieces of your soul on a place you are not sure you want to be?

I knew it would be hard to decide if I got in more than one because they are all great. Purchase made it easy by waitlisting me in the face of a straight up acceptance from Rutgers. That left it between Rutgers and UNCSA if I got in and, when I put it all in a pro and con list and meditated about it for a week, Rutgers came out to be a better fit for what I want. The biggest factors were the year at the Globe, the lack of mt because I have no future in that, and the better selection of academic classes. There will only be time for one academic class a semester, but I will have all the required liberal arts done through community college and AP and will be free to choose what I want to take. I am still trying to find out if I can take them on a pass/no credit or audit basis since I won’t have to take anything.

Hint for next year’s class: If you don’t know anyone at the schools and want to talk to people, it can be most enlightening to find alumni on Facebook that have been out at least a year. Some will blow you off, but others will be very kind and open. I think they give a better picture than people that are still students because they have perspective that comes from separation and how what they learned translates into the real world.

Applied: UNCSA, Point Park University, University of West Florida, Cornish College of the Arts, and DePaul: Theatre School.

Accepted: UNCSA, Point Park, University of West Florida and Cornish College of the Arts.

Waitlisted: DePaul: Theatre School.

My number one has always been UNCSA and now that I got accepted, I’m going! I’m getting my ready to turn in my $500 deposit for housing and tuition.
It’s one of the top five schools for design and production… how can I turn this offer down?!

Congratulations, everyone!! It is so exciting to hear where you are going AND what drove your decision process!!

Congratulations on wonderful choices! tenyearplan, its so nice to see your planning paying off.

Applied to: Point Park, Emerson, CCM, Pace, Marymount Manhattan, Fordham (no reply yet)
Accepted to: Pace (Directing), Marymount (BA Acting)
Rejected from: Point Park, Emerson, CCM
Waitlisted at: -
Final Decision: Pace

Loved the students and faculty, they were all really welcoming! Felt at home on the campus and got a great vibe from the theater department. Can’t wait for next year!

Congrats, spotter!

I’m guessing we’re pretty much in decision mode now. My D I think has narrowed to 3 (plus a waitlist), and she’s starting to do some serious thinking, talking, reading. It’s a win-win situation, really. She has great choices, and I’m happy for her.

Can’t wait to see more of these! Congrats guys! I’m so excited for you all! :)

Waitlist: None

Decision: RSAMD (CPP). This was her always her first choice!

Applied to: Columbia Chicago, DePaul, Millikin, IL Wesleyan, Pace, CMU, Ithaca, Juilliard, Emerson, AMDA, AADA, NYCDA

Accepted to: AMDA, AADA, NYCDA, Millikin (BFA), IL Weslyean (BA), Columbia College

Rejected from: Emerson, Juilliard, Ithaca, CMU, DePaul

Waitlisted at: Nowhere.

Final Decision: Millikn BFA in acting. I visited the campus and sat in on some classes. The staff was extremely friendly as were all the theatre students. THe kids are like one big family there. Also, I saw their production of Golden Gate (part of their new musicals workshop) and not only are their students friendly, but they are extremely talented. I had my doubts about this school, but after the visit, (and all the money they’re throwing at me!) I’m very happy to be attending next year!

Congrats, magenta!
