there isn’t a different app. I would have D email Scholarships and get clarification. Many have said that their apps were submitted and then they got notices “reminding” them to submit. Have her include her CWID.

Thanks! Will do!

Hi!

Posting for my D, have a few questions for the group, but first must say thank you for all of the incredible information on this board. For the record here’s the basics:

Student Gender: Female

Home State: Texas

Date Applied: October 21, 2014

Date Accepted: October 27

Have you visited the campus?: Yes, we did the Honors tour in October

Major: Premed / Biology

Applying to the Honors College?: Yes, Accepted

Career goal(s): Medicine, also interested in the STEM/MBA program

Any else you’d like to mention: D’s initial ACT score was a 30, and the SAT was also a bit low for the Presidential Scholarship, after some intense tutoring her SAT score came up over the 1400. We were notified quite quickly that her scholarship was upgraded to the 100% tuition one.

Questions :

1) Capstone scholars day, D didn’t notice the invite until quite recently. Is there still time to RSVP and attend? If so, does this go beyond the normal Honors tour? D would still like to go as a number of people she’s been face booking with will be there so it could be very positive socially.

2) My wife is an Alum, and when D applied she checked the Alumni scholarship box, but we have not heard anything about it, does this come automatically? or should we have heard something about it by now?

3) STEM/MBA - If we come for the Capstone weekend, is it reasonable to come in a day early to meet with the people in the STEM/MBA program to talk about it? D will be entering with 43 hours of AP credits, and we are curious if it’s possible to graduate in 3 years, and do the MBA in year 4.

4) Dorms, D is planning to live in one of the Honors dorms, it looks like those are the Ridgecrests, is there a preference as to which one? Following up on that, we just put in the housing deposits this week. D has been chatting on Facebook with a number of potential roomies and I suspect will have things worked with the group who wants to all room together.

5) Bamabound, we are planning on attending the first Honors one when it’s scheduled, I saw all the discussion from mom2collegekids about having your schedule planned for registration, when is a good time to meet with an advisor to plan out what D should be taking? Shout out from a big fan as to all the info and posts you put here, it’s just incredible how much and how complete this board is! When we have a question lately I usually respond with "Hmm, let’s consult the oracle, “Google college confidential Alabama Question” 9 times out of 10 there’s a thread or 6 explaining everything. Really owe you all a debt of gratitude!

6) Additional scholarships, I’m not sure if we’ve missed anything merit wise at this point, or if that discussion has either past, or is in the future.

7) Late edit: How do we inform the people about D’s AP scores, does that all happen after the final scores are done in June? How do you register, assume they are all in an passed?

Again thanks in advance for all the help!

@geekdad We’re not sure where my d is going yet, but I sent her AP score report to Bama to see how the credits would work out, and now there’s a very detailed and informative report in the ‘Degree Works’ section of her MyBama account. I’m so impressed with how well organized the school is.

Thanks for letting me know about the Degree Works section! I found it very useful!

@hs2015mom Thanks! I’ll get those submitted right away. I spoke with one of my co-worker’s daughters who is a freshmen this year, she said everything went in really easy and not to worry.

** Congrats on getting the Presidential!

You will have to call and see. I don’t think it’s too late, but you will have to call.

This is different from an Honors Tour, because it’s in a very large group setting (I think it’s still held in Bryant Hall).

If you’re looking for some personal attention, this won’t be available that day because there will be about 1000 people there (each student can only bring ONE parent…they’re strict about that because of space.)

Only you can determine whether it’s worth the expense of an extra trip for social reasons for your D. I doubt you’d learn much more than you already know.

Did your wife join the Alumni Club? I think that is a req’t to get that award. If your wife hasn’t joined, have her do so.

It would be a BIG mistake for your D to “graduate in 3 years” and then do MBA. She’d lose that 4th year of tuition the moment she graduates. She can do the STEM/MBA within 4 years if she has a lot of credits, and then get both her BS and MBA degrees at the same time.

<<<<

All the Ridgecrests are very nice… It seems like frosh may prefer RC-South either tower.

5) Bamabound, we are planning on attending the first Honors one when it’s scheduled, I saw all the discussion from mom2collegekids about having your schedule planned for registration,
when is a good time to meet with an advisor to plan out what D should be taking?
<<<<

Before going to BB, it’s a good idea to have a grid written out with a possible schedule that INCLUDES alternatives. You do this before going to BB. Then at BB, advising may look it over.

There is no need to meet with an advisor to plan what a bio premed should be taking. That is pretty much “boilerplate”.

http://bsc.ua.edu/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Suggested-course-sequence-Math-112-placement.pdf

Health professions concentration. Students pursuing a major in biology who are interested in a career in health professions such as medicine, dentistry, optometry, or veterinary can choose a sequence of courses in the health professions concentration. The concentration also provides in-depth exposure to subject material found on the MCAT, DAT, and OAT. These students should choose the biology electives from the following courses: BSC 310, BSC 400, BSC 409, BSC 410, BSC 424, BSC 425, BSC 431, BSC 432, BSC 435, BSC 450, and BSC 460.

@mom2collegekids - Again thank you so much for all the help on this board, really incredible.

Follow up question on premed, is there any upside or downside to taking the Honors versions of Bio or Chem? is one harder then the other etc? From reading everything else it seems that GPA, and especially science GPA is paramount to the whole med school application process.

Also how is the whole premed advising program at Alabama? Will they help D sort out volunteering, shadowing, etc? and do you have any advice about the non academic stuff to help get into med school?

Thanks!

It makes no difference to med schools if you take the honors version or not. Take whatever works for schedule and if you have a preferred prof. GPA is what matters…always.

Students receive notifications of opportunities thru ListServ and AED meetings.

Premeds (and parents) should get on the premed advising Listserv ASAP (even now).
http://prehealth.ua.edu/ (scroll down that link and put in your email addresses. )
This will alert you to the pre-health “goings-on” …shadowing opps, guest speakers, mock interviews, etc.

You can see that there are many useful links on the website.

<<<
Also how is the whole premed advising program at Alabama?

There is also a link on that page for premeds to set up premed Advising appts. Be advised that at nearly all schools, there are MANY frosh premeds and many will get weeded out after the first semester or two. Schools know that, so Premed Advising isn’t going to be very intense or individualized for Freshman. When it comes time to actually apply to med school, there may only be about 150 remaining…a substantial reduction from the maybe 400 incoming frosh premeds. Obviously, a school can give more focused attention on 150 true premeds, rather than 400+ incoming frosh where most won’t be premed after a year.

AED info:

Once the student is on campus, he/she should join the Bama chapter of premed AED group (Alpha Epsilon Delta)

Alpha Epsilon Delta is UA’s Pre-Health Honors Society dedicated to the encouragement and recognition of excellence in pre-professional health scholarship.

We will have weekly meetings on Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. in Lloyd 38 in which guest lecturers will cover a wide variety of topics that will help better your understanding the field of Health Care and why you should enter it.

We welcome ALL students engaged in the pursuit of professional health career, including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physical therapy, among others. It is NOT necessary to be an initiated member to attend the meetings. For more information, please refer to the calendar on the homepage and the weekly emails sent by the Executive Board.

more about AED from another UA site:
AED provides pre-health (mostly pre-med, but all health professions are covered) students with valuable information and assistance in their quest for a career in health care. Weekly meetings provide excellent information from leading professionals in the medical field. In addition, our peer network assists in many aspects of a pre-health degree such as: tutoring, teacher recommendations, MCAT tips, course scheduling, and social events!!! Please visit www.aed.ua.edu and see what AED can offer you!

There are now some mandatory meetings for those who will soon start the med/dental/etc school app process:
<a href=“Resources – Prehealth Program”>http://prehealth.ua.edu/other-resources/

I’m guessing that these mandatory meetings go over issues such as the timeline for the entire med school app process, deadlines, getting LORs, setting up the Committee Interview, and likely tips about the Personal Statement, etc.

For other pre-health UA clubs/associations, see: <a href=“Student Organizations – Prehealth Program”>http://prehealth.ua.edu/student-organizations/

Ask your family’s doctors if you can shadow over breaks…it’s an easy way to pick up 10-20 shadowing hours.

Try to shadow a few different specialties, even if you don’t have an interest in one.

If your local hospital will let you volunteer, then do so.

Any medically-related shadowing, experiences, volunteering is valid. As LizzyM says, “if you can smell the patients, it’s a clinical experience.” …so it counts. LizzyM is a rather famous med school Adcom who has given countless hours advising premeds. She has also developed the famous LizzyM scoring that helps determine where you should apply with your stats. With the “new MCAT” scoring arriving, her calculations will get adjusted.

Ask science profs if there is any research that they’re doing that you can help with.

If the plan is to apply during summer after Junior year, then take the MCAT at least once (maybe twice) by about March of junior year. Taking the MCAT later just drags everything down. It takes at least a month to get the test results.

Identify and contact Recommenders at least a few months before the LORs are needed. So, if you want to have all of your LORs submitted to the Pre-med Advising office by April of the app year, then contact the profs in January…and give them a March deadline…and send a nice reminder in February if necessary. It’s usually easiest to send each Recommender an email with an attached Resume and an attached LOR form from the Advising Office, asking if you can meet with them to discuss getting a LOR. Often the prof will say that a meeting isn’t necessary and they’ll just use the info from the Resume and their own inputs to submit the LOR. Once the Advising Office has all of your LORs, they set up a Committee Interview and they’ll write the Committee Letter. Obviously, since there are over 200 students applying to med/dental/vet/PT/PA schools, they can get backed-up…so do all of this EARLY!!!

It’s best to start on the PS a few months before AMCAS opens the application. Many start on their PS over Christmas. There may still be an Honors class that includes writing the PS. Once AMCAS opens the app, begin filling it in (it’s long…like 18 pages…and requires a LOT of time). Then as soon as AMCAS allows you to submit, do so (if you’re complete). The earlier the BETTER. AMCAS can take TWO MONTHS to verify all of your info, which really can delay everything if you don’t apply EARLY, EARLY, EARLY.

Applying EARLY is always KEY. A fabulous app that is submitted later in the app cycle will OFTEN get overlooked.

Med schools have a very limited number of interview spots, and they start penciling people in during the summer, so if your app is late getting submitted and verified, then you may miss out on even getting an interview.

forgot to address this…

You need to contact the HC now and ask if there will be anyone available on that Friday. There are 500 students arriving that day and on Thursday and many will be thinking the same thing you are. And, since the HC will be busy preparing for the next day (CSDay) it will likely be very chaotic that Friday.

A few of us have tried visiting that Friday, and the HC is very overwhelmed . A few years ago, the HC did really try, but with SO MANY showing up that Friday, schedules got confused, student-ambassadors couldn’t all be where they needed to be, that some things fell thru the cracks. I had my nephew with me, and since I was already very familiar with everything, I was able to handle it, but someone new to the campus would have been disappointed.

One parent recently told me that the HC seems to be discouraging HC visits that Friday…again, likely because they’re all super-focused on getting everything ready for CSDay the next day. (500 students/500 parents)

@mom2collegekids

Again thank you for all the detailed information, it’s incredibly helpful.

After looking at this a bit further we decided that the Capstone weekend is probably not worth the effort. D will want to come on campus one last time once all the final college decisions are in, she still has applications in to a number of schools that she hasn’t heard back from Florida, Miami, and UT Austin. So far it is hard to imagine that there will be any real decision making at the end of this, but we’ll probably do one more trip to Bama sometime in late Feb or early March, depending when the Honors BB session is. It sounds like the Capstone day would be great if it didn’t involve 2 plane tickets, etc.

Follow up question on Shadowing, etc. Will the med schools count shadowing done this summer between HS and college? D will probably get in some shadowing locally if nothing else because she’s fascinated by it all. Seeing some things live would be a nice bonus beyond the surgery channel and internet surgery vids that she watches now.

@geekdad42

There are about 4-5 Honors BB Orientations. There are usually 2 in May, 1 or 2 in June, and 1 in July.

Yes, that is post-high-school.

My son was invited to the Capstone weekend, and we decided he didn’t need to go because we visited in October. I’m hoping this was a good idea, since we are out-of-state. I didn’t think it was important for him to attend. Now I am wondering if he might miss out on something. He applied for the Fellows program and the CBH program so we are hoping to get a phone interview for one of the programs and possibly visit in February.

I doubt that your son will miss out on anything. You visited last Fall, and you’d get more info at Bama Bound if your son decides to enroll.
When I look over the agenda, it looks a lot like a Bama Bound Orientation.

Have you visited the campus?: Not yet
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Applying to the Honors College?: Probably
Career goal(s): possibly a Master’s in Industrial Engineering, but not sure
Anything else you’d like to mention: ACT 32, GPA 4.0/4.5; hoping for Presidential and engineering scholarships
My daughter didn’t receive a scholarship letter yet or an invite to Scholar’s Day, but we need to visit soon. Should we see if she receives an Scholar’s Day invite or would another day be better?
CSDay is in two weeks. I don’t know if they’re still issuing invites. You could call Admissions and ask if there is still time to be invited.
That said, for a first visit, I don’t think CS Day is a good day to visit. You’re better off coming at a time when the HC can set up a personalized visit for you.
You don’t need to “hope” for those awards…she’ll get them!
I just checked my myBama account, and my request for a major change to Chemical Engineering has been processed. Will I be receiving another scholarship letter soon?
@tobester
It should come within a couple of weeks. School is closed now.
Hi, I’ve applied to the university and I’m awaiting a response on wether or not I’m accepted.
Today I look at my mybama account and it now says that they need my 7th semester grades and a new SAT/ACT score? Does anyone have an idea of what that means?
Are they on the fence about me? My GPA honestly isn’t great and my SAT scores were average. It’s just making me more and more anxious with everyday that passes.
^^^
What were your test scores and GPA?
How were your grades this last semester?
Have you retested?
